Crossfire w/2x 5870 Tears screen in Windows Desktop only. Games work fine...

Thread Starter
I have a multi-monitor desktop with my two Sapphire Radeon HD 5870's which are in crossfire. When I'm in on my desktop or running any application that isnt a game, my screen is constantly tearing. In a game, it works perfectly. I know, it sounds kind of wierd, so the following video I just took explains it better...

Now it seems like the cards are rendering everthing correctly, because I also recorded a screencast using Fraps, and everything displayed perfectly, even though my monitors were freaking out...

As soon as I post this I am updating my profile to show my build, and my monitors are(from left to right)
Acer H203H
ViewSonic NX2232w
LG W1943

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

All three of my 5850s do the same thing. Single card, 2x Xfire, 3x Xfire. Perfect in 3d but crapola on the desktop.

Does it every once in a while at stock speeds. If I enable Overdrive or Afterburner it does it worse even at stock speeds and is pretty terrible overclocked/underclocked.

So to say I'm interested in an answer also is an understatement. rolleyes.gif

Well I did a clean install of windows and drivers to do a little testing and found some interesting results.

If I change the clocks on my primary GPU at all the default 2D clocks will go from 400/1000 to 157/400 which will cause tearing on the desktop. I can change the second and third GPUs clocks no problem but it doesn't matter if they drop to 157/400 in 2D since they're not being used and that's what it's supposed to do. I can even set a profile in Afterburner for higher 2D clocks and it will still drop back to 157/400 when coming out of 3D.

1:Start Catalyst, enable Overdrive.

2:Close catalyst and remove it from startup.

3:Install MSI Afterburner and unlock unofficial overclocking.

4:???

5:Profit! Now you can overclock your cards without flickering!

Card memory is down clocking giving 2D flickering. Are your cards overclocked at all, happens only with overclocked cards.

Oops... Card #2 had overdrive enabled... everything else was default, but i guess that was the cause... Disabled it and now i get almost no flicker whatsoever(but I still do every once in a while)

Hmm... I may have to try this if I want to OC...

It's a well known bug due to the GPU's down clocking too much in 2D mode. Basically GPU is down clocked so much it can't actually render multiple monitors doh.gif
They fixed this a few driver updates ago for the 6000 series, not sure why they didn't for the 5000 series.

But basically, use any custom OCing program of your choice like afterburner and just have a profile for higher clocks for 2D mode.
