[Build Log] X79 Fully Watercooled

Thread Starter
Hi,

I havnt done a build log before so appologies for anything out of the ordinary.

I have decided to take the plunge into the X79 SB-E platform, as after reading and drool.gif for the past few weeks, i just couldnt resist.
My original plan was to make a rig seperate to my sig rig for 24/7 folding however i have changed my mind and am going to build this as my primary rig, which will be used for gaming and web when i have the time, and folding the rest of the time.

My new build is going to go into my existing HAF 932 case (if i can), i am going to sell my 2 560ti's and (hopefully) my mobo, and my 2600k is going to go into a m-itx 1155 mobo i have for media/folding.

So spec of hardware:

Intel Core i7 3930k
Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme x79
16GB Corsair Dominator RAM
OCZ ZX 1250W PSU
2x EVGA GTX 580 Hydro Copper 2 3GB Version

I will be reusing my current 60gb OCZ Vertex 2 and my WD 1tb and 1.5tb hard drives from my current build.

I will be re-using some of my current water setup, with some modifications and additions.

Water cooling:

XSPC RX360 360mm Radiator
Hardware Labs Black Ice SR 120mm Radiator
Laing D5 (VPP655SE) Pump
EK Supreme HF Full Copper CPU Block
Primochill Primoflex Black Tubing.
Mixture of EK/Koolance Compression fittings
Mixture EK/Bitspower Rotary's

I havnt confirmed which res i will use yet. I have a Phobya 250, Phobya 150 and a EK 150 Advanced multioption. Im not sure how much space im going to have in my 932, so i will decide once i have started building.

So i think thats it for now in terms of my plan. I took delivery of parts today. Here is a couple of quick picks i have taken.

img0310rj.jpg
img0307kh.jpg

Il put some more pics up of hardware once i get some daylight. I am hoping to start my build this coming friday, as i have the day off work. I will be taking and posting pics throughout my build and will give some numbers once complete of benchmarks, overclocks etc.

Thanks for reading.

So had a day off work today. spent whole day building pc from 8am this morning till now (GMT).

Its up and running and usable. Still got bits todo tiding up in the case, change a few fans and add some lighting into the case.

Here is a few pics of the build today.

img0342p.jpg

It is a beast. I havnt done alot with it yet but temps are awsome, with the gfx cards at 21c at idle and cpu at 25c idle.
Done a few 3dmark 11 runs, ran 11804 with everything at stock. gfx topped out at 30c under load and cpu 38c. I have o/ced the 580's to 950/1900/2100 @ 1.125v and ran a 13590 on 3dmark11 gfx temp max 32c cpu max 41c.

VERY happy so far. Havnt touched the cpu yet im just making sure everything is working alright first.

Thanks. Im looking forward to tommorow to have the whole day playing with it.

O/ced the cpu to 4.8ghz at 1.45v. ran 1 hour prime 95 max temp 64c.

Having trouble keeping the gfx cards stable at the moment need to spend some time tweaking volatages etc to get them right.

Here is a quick pic of it all together and running (poor quality as taken last night)

Looks awesome. One question I have, though, is how difficult it is to use black tubing. I have got some clear tubing but reckon black might suit my R4E better...

Using black tubing is no different to using any other coloured (or clear) tubing as far as i know. The difference is in the brand/size of tubing you use. Different brands of tube have different make-up which might be more flexible or less flexible etc. Also the size will effect the flexibility. I personally like the like the look of the bigger tube 1/2 ID 3/4 OD however you do loose some flexibility.

The primochill primoflex tube i have used is very good quality and feels great, however it isnt very flexible (due to the size) so rotarys are necessary. I like black as coloured/dyed coolant doesnt appeal to me, and with clear tubing you risk it going cloudy and dirty looking. Atleast with black it will always look new smile.gif. Just my opinion ofc.

Today i have added some Bitfenix Alchemy L.E.D lighting and braided extensions.

p1040103f.jpg

p1040108x.jpg

I would highly recommend both these products. The braided extensions are fantastic quality and look great, and imo are also a reasonable price. The L.E.D lights are also great quality, very well made and VERY bright.

p1040122w.jpg

(Sorry for the poor quality pictures i have been given a digital camera and have no idea how to get it to take a decent picture tongue.gif)

A update on the system itself. Overclock's stable and im happy with them... CPU at 4.8ghz 1.46v stable 6+ hours in prime max temps 63c. GPU's at 980/2100 1.15v fully stable in benchmarks and bf3/mw3/skyrim etc max temps 45c.

Still todo:
More case tiding, remove red lights from front fan / replace rear fan with a AP-15 and replace case side fan with 4x AP-15's.
Replace ram as im really not happy with the corsair vengance i know its cheap ram and it shows. I will be going with some 2133mhz rip jaws X or maybe some 2400mhz corsair dominator.
Replace my old vertex 2 SSD with a bigger newer sata 6gb/s SDD.

Thats pretty much it for now. Once i work out how to take some decent pics with this camera (its a lumix DMC-TZ4 if anyone wants to give me some advice) il post them up.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks. The issue I have is really with regard to filling - how can you tell when coolant has reached the pump? I just don't want to let my pump suck up too much air... Or do you just wait for the reservoir to start holding fluid?
