Difference between SATA 2 and 3

I was wondering what the speed difference between a SATA 3 (say the m4 for example) drive running on a SATA 2 port vs SATA 3 port was.

I have read on this forum that new SSDs fully saturate a SATA 2 port, in which case it would be faster on SATA 3. However, that doesn't really make sense to me. The advertised max read/write speeds are less than 500MB/s, well below the 3GB/s capacity of SATA 2.

Sata 3 is faster, but real world use you wouldn't really notice the difference. On a sata 2 port, the drive will probably run around the high 200MBps (woops smile.gif)

I believe the bandwidth of SATA is measured in bits. Ie; 240MB/s Read = 1,920 Mbit/s which is close to SATA2 limitations. So in the case of SATA3 drives with an estimated read speed of 500MB/s would equate to 4,000Mbit/s way below SATA3 6Gb/s limit.

Mind your capitalization--there's a difference between "B" (bytes) and "b" (bits). SATA II supports up to 3Gbits/s while SATA III supports 6Gbits/s. These equate to 375 megaBYTES per second, and 750 megaBYTES per second, respectively.

Keep in mind that 3Gb/s is the theoretical burst rate for SATAII--taking other overheads into account, it's more like 2.5Gb/s, which in megaBYTES (not bits) equates to about 300MB/s on a single port. Add in a bit of overhead to those, and given that we currently have SSD's that can achieve sustained writes of at least 260MB/s, and sustained reads of 500MB/s, SATA III would be needed.

Yea your right, I didn't notice sats's speeds were in bps. The Crucial M4s maximum advertised read speed is 415 MB/s, or 3325Mb/s, so It would be slightly handicapped by SATA 2.

Oh well, I don't think thats enough to worry about, at least not enough to buy another mobo.

Does pose an interesting quandry, myself (soon) and many others on OCN are using RAID-0 on 2x 6gb/s SSD's, which could potentially exceed SATA3 bandwidth, although 500MB/s advertised read is far exaggerated by most manufacturers as you know. But in the near future when drive controllers are more optimised, we're going to be bottlenecked all over again.

You could already exceed the bandwidth of SATA 3 if you had 2 fast SSDs in RAID 0 haha. I wonder if another interface upgrade is not very far away. Isn't thunderbolt supposed to achieve crazy fast speeds (>10Gbps)?

PCI-E SSD is already commonly used amongst some enthusiasts with the Revo drive range. SSD's will more likely take the PCI-E form for good number of years. Personally i am buying 2x Corsair Performance Pro's in RAID-0, i'm actually considering going a Revo Drive instead since 375MB/s read is pretty common for the average fast single SSD. I want to get the most for my money, last thing i want is to be saturating SATA3 and limiting my potential drives.
