Intake or Exhaust side fan?

Thread Starter
I want to add a 120mm side fan to my Antec 902 case to give some extra cooling to the SLI cards, but because the cards dont use the standard one fan design they actually push air in the case and through the back of the case/PCI slot exhaust (see pic below).

My question is, should the side fan blow air inside the case or suck it out? There is a lot of warm air hitting the fan on the inside from the gfx cards so exhaust would be better?

exhaust would be better imo, That cooler is similar to to the Twin Frozr and not all the hot air leaves through the back. Some spreads out throught the case.

I would say exhaust is a good choice, but you may also want to be mindful of what the rest of your fans are doing as well.

yeah run it exhaust. Getting that hot air out of the case will be better for your system all around.

The rest of the fans are 2 x 120mm front intake, 1 x 120mm rear exhaust and 1 x 200 or 250mm top exhaust
Also would it be a good idea to power the fan from the mobo 3 pin connectors, will that give it a variable speed for example? As opposed to molex power which I assume will have it spin at a constant speed?

The fan is a Xilence Red Wing 120mm

Go exhaust, and as long as the fan isn't loud I don't see why you wouldn't go molex, if it's connected to the mobo it may work better, but to my knowledge there is really no good way to control it, and can be unpredictable (i.e. On when it's not needed or off when it is).

Thats only if its a CPU pwm fan. You should be able to control it from bios. Or if you want to use the molex and you don't want it running at full speed for noise you can rewire the pins to have it run on 5v or 7v..

This link will show you where to move the pins.

I did this on a folding rig I had and it worked really well.

If it's near the bottom on the side panel, then intake. Heat goes up, cold goes down. Hence the genius design of Antec always putting an exhaust at the top.

Actually it seems the fan is pre-set to 5v molex pin out.
