$300 - 2500k or new GPU?

Thread Starter
I have a $300 budget for a Christmas present this year, and I am considering either:

2500k, cheap mobo, and probably about 8GB DDR3, while sticking with my 9800GT

or a new GPU, maybe a 6950/70,a 560Ti 448, or a 570, while sticking with my Athlon II X3 etc. My current mobo doesn't allow SLI so that isn't an option, and preferably I'd like to be able to stick with my CX400 PSU.

Obviously a GPU upgrade would increase my FPS much more (given that I play at 1080p, but my 9800GT is still able to max or near max new games just with no AA) but with a 3 core at 3GHz hold back a new GPU too much?

So basically: for $300, should I get a 2500k, a GPU, or what? (maybe like a 6950 and a SSD...)

for $300 you wont get a gpu that bottlenecks ur x3

only thing that might is a 590 or 6990 or any sli... either way if its mainly for gaming get a gpu...

i just went from a x4 640 to 2500k and i cant tell any bit of difference... i should have gotten 2nd 6870 or 6970

7000 series radeon coming january if you can wait

If you are mainly a gamer you will benefit more from a gpu than a cpu but the choice is yours. You are gpu limited because of your power supply.

If you are going for a new gpu you are going to want a new power supply if you choose a 6900 series or a 560ti and up. I would recommend a 6870 and an ssd with what you have. You wont be bottlenecked by your cpu.

Or you could just get a bigger psu and ssd right now and upgrade the rest later. That way you will have the option for a 7000 series gpu or a 600 series and possibly ivy bridge.

yeah i just dont see how you can avoid replacing 9800gt... theres no way u can play any of the games from this year at high on 1080... some games i have to reduce to medium even on 6870

u should get 6950 maybe you can get 64gb ssd with it...

get a 2500k, you can get by with 9800 gt, but athon x3 will limit games you can play. Good luck getting Gtaiv or battlefield 3 to run on athlonx3. But 9800 gt would have no problem, you would just have to turn down a few graphics options.

Good luck getting gamecube and wii emulation working on athlon x3 too. You want to play skyward sword in HD, you will need 2500k.

Also, if you look around overclock.net, you will see people selling their old video card for very cheap.

Once new 7000 series gpus comes out, you will be able to get good deals on old 5000 and 6000 series.

OP is gaming at 1080p, Its all about the GPU. You're giving very BAD advice, especially in regards to BF3. See for yourself if you don't believe me. An Athlon II, worst than the OPs Phenom II X3, performs nearly the same as a i7 2600K.

GCN/PS2 emulation isn't very satisfactory at all on my system, true, although tbh it may just be pebkac.

I actually do run GTA IV pretty well on my PC, I just turn down shadows to medium or low, but other than that I have everything maxed. I don't need 60 FPS for that type of game, it'd be nice but isn't necessary. Other games though I can't, like the new Assassin's Creed, even with low shadows, no AA, and low environments I'm not getting good enough FPS. Its all relative to the pace of the game: GTA IV ok, AC:R not, Anno 2070 ok, STALKER not. I don't have BF3, but I do have BC2, and of the little single player I've played, I'm not able to play it at a good FPS.

Is DX11 and tessellation really that much extra burden on the GPUs? I once commented on a Dirt 3 video saying I was able to basically max the game at good FPS on my 9800GT at 1080p until someone reminded me my 9800GT couldn't do the extra tessellation work newer cards could.

Another thing you guys reminded me of is the new gen of GPUs coming out soon. Maybe I should get a 2500k etc now and later on get a 5xx or a 69xx series card(s) for much cheaper? My birthday isn't too far off, in June biggrin.gif

You should go to Microcenter and get the 2500k for $180 and get $50 off a mobo deal, which would be sweet. --> http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589

For GPUs, you can either wait for the new gen HD79XX which will push down prices on the older stuff or you could get the HD5870 for $150 shipped which will be a big improvement for you. -> http://www.gearxs.com/gearxs/product_info.php?products_id=15897
