Best Asus 23"-24" Monitor for gaming. $200 budget.

post #1 of 20

Hello all,

I'm in need of an upgrade in the display department, and I must admit I know little to nothing when it comes to monitors. Browsing around Newegg I've come to notice a large variety of Asus monitors for around $180, with little difference from what I can tell (other than contrast.)

Any suggestions, recommendations, or good ol' fashion wisdom would be much appreciated.

The VH242H does seem to be the most popular on Newegg, and was one of the three I was initially looking at:

VH242H
VW246H
VH238H

Can someone educate me on how to tell if a monitor is TN or IPS? Maybe I'm wasting my time, but the reason I'm asking is from what I've been reading TN seems to be more of what I'm looking for.

Edit: I must say though, the viewing angles on IPS is really attractive.

IPS is usually more expensive than TN.

Why not google the model and check which lcd it has? There's no real way to tell aside actually seeing the screens.

If you're gaming stick with a TN and if you work in anything that needs color fidelity than get an IPS.

A low cost TN vs IPS isn't a fair fight though. It should be something like IPS vs 120 hz LCDs.

Also try to pick up your monitor in person. I bought from Newegg this year trying to be clever and not have to drive to MC and I got an LCD with dead pixels. Not enough to RMA but enough to annoy the hell out of me.

Either that or someplace that has a better return policy.

@evilferret Thanks for the info.

I didn't know there was such a price difference in the two. with only working with $200 I doubt I'll have to worry about it being IPS. tongue.gif

Totally see where you're coming from when it comes to buying something in store, the sad part is my local Micro Center, Best Buy, ect... doesn't have *blank* when it comes to monitors.
