I am building my very first gaming rig for xmas. Totally new to this stuff and after a few months of researching parts I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed...

I believe I finalized my decision for every component, except for the GPU. It is between the MSI Twin Frozr III and the Gainward Phantom.

I have found sites proposing equal pricing for both so $$ is of no concern.
What it boils down to is this:
cooling
sound output
clocking speeds (OC and not OC)
sheer size / sli capability considering my MOBO and case ( because I assume I will need to sli in a couple of years in order to maintain max settings on future games)
Return Policy / customer service

If anyone can help me with these criteria I would be extremely grateful! ^_^

P.S.
I have created my proposed rig on this site in case anyone wants to give me some feedback for the whole thing... wink.gif

EDIT: Im between the MSI and the ASUS ^_^

Im assuming your not in the USA but I have never seen a phantom for sale at a retail store or reviews in the USA so cant comment on that, but msi has an excellent reputation and build quality is great. Their 570gtx tripple over voltage even lets you adjust memory voltage too if you want to overclock as much as possible. That gainward phantom looks like its slightly wider than 2 slots since its all passive cooling/no fans just big cooler. Looks like 2.5 slots or so. I would personally pick the msi since i have had great luck with them and they have excellent coolers. Fan noise I heard can be loud/high pitched I hear. With my msi 560ti it was high pitched but not super loud, its just that the high sound is more annoying than lower pitched noises.

In the USA my option was between msi and asus since they both had excellent cards. I loved my msi 560ti and was sold on another msi but decided to try the asus card, both being pretty much equal I went with the one with the nice looking metal plate on the back since thats the only side of the card you see when its installed. Asus one has been great, but so would have been an msi too. They are both great cards (asus and msi) but with 3 slots it may be too much for your motherboard, although mine will fit perfectly. The best part about the asus is it is quiet!! If you do hear it its a lower pitched noise and not annoying to hear.

So MSI is great, but cant comment on the phantom line up from gainward

I'm in the US, but there are sites online that sell the Phantom.

I don't know a great deal about MOBOs... I had thought that they were all about the same size? This is my proposed MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157265

Which MOBO do you have? I was considering the ASUS for a long time, but decided on the MSI because the clock-speeds were higher and the overall size was much smaller. Plus with the triple over voltage the MSI can be OC just as far if not farther than the ASUS...

I have never heard of the MSI GPU having noise problems... <.< but that high pitch sound you are suggesting that comes with the MSI is worrisome... That could get annoying :/

With that motherboard you can sli the asus gtx570. It would take every spot except the very top pcie 1x which you can use for a sound card or wifi adapter. I only run one gtx570 and it plays bf3 ultra just fine on a 1080 (1920x1080 monitor). Only thing I have off is msaa and blur. It looks the same with it on and off and it plays super smooth with it off so I leave it like that. The gtx570 is a great card and you may not even need to sli it, but you can as long as your ok with only having one available pci-e x1 (small one)

WIth msi and the 560ti (the 570 might be different but think the same fan) the sound at high speed to full speed isnt like its super loud but its the pitch that kinda annoyed me, it was a little high pitched but that is personal prefference. It might not bother you. The msi gtx570 does have a brace along the side of the card but asus uses that sweet metal back plate. The only advantage msi has are the extra voltage settings but honestly you shouldnt need to over volt the memory and vrm's unless you have it under a water cooled setup. Most of the cards dont have that feature unless you make a custom bios for the card.

My asus card plays perfect at 880mhz with 1088mv and memory at 2200mhz (4400mhz). Its peak with 1125mv is probably 915mhz, I played at that and 930 it crashes on bf3, so maybe 920mhz but I can verify 915mhz. The thing is its the lotto with overclocking, some guys get 960mhz some get less than I do, but the thing is asus builds it very nice and so does msi. Get whichever one looks more appealing at this point. But I gotta say if your ok with the 3 slots the asus takes up it is VERY VERY quiet while gaming. There is an asus and msi deticated "club" too which you can peak inside to see the overclocks people run. The factory 780mhz overclock msi does though is Super easy to get on any card pretty much. Mine did 770 without adding any voltage/

...you really think I could sli the ASUS DCII???? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1297332&CatId=7004

that one^^^ really??? ._.

I'm fine with it taking up 3 slots in the back... can't think of anything else that will use up the slots honestly, besides maybe my wireless card in the pci slot... this is my case and wireless card im getting for sure:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166051

and you really think I'd be able to sli that thing STILL? and I'm reading that the core clock speeds and memory clocks in the MSI are higher... and with the higher OC capabilities on the MSI I can only assume that the MSI would beat any clocking capabilities of the ASUS... :/

but I would love to hear more about this high pitched noise you are describing that you have heard from the MSI... that sounds REALLY annoying frown.gif though, you only heard it in a MSI 560 ti? Is that correct?

You need a pci-e wireless card that would need to sit on top of the top card in the pci-e slot
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100010074%20600014297&IsNodeId=1&name=PCI%20Express

I have the d-link one and my cousin has the 2 antenna asus, both do good, probably any one of them will do good though. Another thing you can do it buy a second router and set it up as a repeater, that way you have that router next to your pc and connect by wire. When set as a repeater its pretty much an extention of the original router. I was thinking of doing that to simplify the look of my motherboard since the wireless card doesnt match anything lol

Yeah sli ok, thats the same card I have. Its 3 slots, in the new egg picture you will see the two pci-e x16 lanes that are highlighted/linked together and it says sli 16x and 8x speed. Those are the two video card slots. There are 3 slots/rows between the two then the other card starts and will finish right at the bottom of the motherboard. The mobo usb connectors are there but it should fit.

People say msi bins better for better gpu's but its still the lotto. They probably test every card to 800-820mhz so they run at 780 no problem, but there is a guy in the gtx570 overclock thread that needed to add voltage to his new msi 570 or it would crash at 780. So im not sure they cherry pick like people say. Noise wont be terrible, I bet youtube has videos. My experience was with a 560ti TFii. Msi are great cards though and I loved my 560ti but after the asus one I might stick with asus again. Asus has youtube product videos which I like how they took the time to make them to describe how they build it for overclocking.

With any card 850mhz vs 900mhz is so small its maybe only worth 2fps if that. Either choice you will be happy. I was going to go msi but switched last minute after looking deeper into asus.

Were you getting 2 cards at the same time or one now and other later?

so why do i need a pci-e wireless card vs the PCI card i picked out? Im still confused with that... will the PCI card not fit into my MOBO? will the antennas be getting in the way of my outputs? O.o

and I intend to just buy the one card for right now and sli perhaps in a couple years when I will actually need an upgrade for newer games...

It's actually quite hard to help if you don't have a hardware list that specifies the components you have.

I suggest you list them all under your sig so we can make an informed decision.

Also, If you are not listing the games that you are playing/would like to play and what resolution you would be looking at to play them, it again makes it difficult to give you an informed opinion.

Other than that, I'd be glad to help you make a decision:thumb:
