Wanted: Smartphone - Needed: Advice

I have been intently following the new phones of Q4 - The Droid Razr, HTC Rezound, and Galaxy Nexus primarily. I was very close to dropping the required $760 to pick up an unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus just hours ago. However, the more I think about it, the more I feel that I'd rather not invest too heavily in a phone at this time, even if I can resell it later. With Tegra 3 and other speedy solutions on the horizon, I think that I would happier to spend less on an unlocked phone that will be faster than my last smartphone (original Motorola Droid) and that should be in line for an ICS upgrade in the near future. This concept has brought me to the Samsung Nexus S i9023 unlocked phone http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875176321

I currently only have a dumb-phone that cannot perform functions beyond making calls and is quite beaten up, so almost any smartphone would be an improvement. If I wanted to spend more, I enjoyed the feel of the HTC sensation, but at $500 it's getting a bit too close to the $760 price point of the Galaxy Nexus tongue.gif

Before this Nexus S idea appeared, I was considering these options:

GSM Unlocked Galaxy Nexus / t-mobile $70/mo unlimited monthly plan (no contract) = $760 + $70/mo (Newegg Phone) ~$2500 2-Year Cost
Galaxy Nexus / Verizon 450 Min / Unlimited Text / 4GB Data = $300 + $90/mo (Amazon Wireless or Verizon Store) ~$2500 2-Year Cost
Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch / Sprint 450 Min / Unlimited Text / Unlimited Data = $100 + $80/mo (Amazon Wireless) ~$2100 2-Year Cost

I couldn't get Verizon to budge in their pricing on the HTC Rezound + Contract despite Amazon offering the same plan with a $100 cheaper phone... Any tips for negotiating a new contract would be helpful, too (with any non-AT&T carrier - I currently do not have a contract).

Any input regarding my situation and options is appreciated... I've been spending quite a bit of time mulling over all the available information to try to make an informed decision that will both satisfy my need for a smartphone and not brake the bank. I can use all the help I can get forming a plan of attack (I've never had to buy my own smartphone before, I miss having jobs that provide them =P)

Thanks,
Yoshi

Buying unlocked means you can sell it anywhere. I bought a T-Mobile HD2 cause my wife thought she wanted it, by the time we got it unlocked to work on the local carrier she decided to stick with a Sprint phone. I turned a $50 profit and sold it for $275 to a guy in the Ukraine less than a day after listing it.

Yep, that's one of the most attractive aspects of buying an unlocked phone, the resell-ability smile.gif (In addition to the moderate freedom) I'm strongly leaning toward getting that Nexus S and using the $30 walmart t-mobile plan for ~6 months then jumping on board with a major carrier once Tegra 3 and equivalently powerful components hit smartphones.

If youre data heavy, i seriously recommend Sprint if you want an interim phone, and the Nexus S was free last i looked. $70 a month with 2 years, but you can probably get someone to take over the account, or get yourself a nicer phone when they are available. If you do go Sprint, let me know cause we can both get a kickback.

I'm thinking about just grabbing the Epic 4G Touch on Sprint and going for their 450/unlimited text/data plan - $80/mo for the plan isn't terrible, and I have 14 days to figure it out. I don't like that they charge activation fees though =/ (and amazon has the epic 4g touch for $100 vs their $200). It wouldn't be to bad if I could upgrade the phone after 8-12 months.

Never

I don't support Apple. That and I like Android's openness. I'm not interested in Windows Phone either and won't be until Windows 8 ARM.

There are two Apple products that I allow to exist in my house:
1) My old 4GB iPod Mini - It was a gift =P
2) My girlfriend's 8GB iPod Touch (3rd Gen) - We won it in a raffle smile.gif

I will not pay for an apple product wink.gif

I said the same thing, and wound up getting an iPhone 4S. You should atleast LOOK at it and see, maybe it'll change your view of Apple. I vowed to never buy a Corsair product again because of the multiple bad batches of ram I got from them in a row even....

Now I had their H50 cooler, Corsair 800D and the 1000watt HX PSU -- But...... I'll never buy their ram again.

Anywho, it's a great phone, nothing wrong with the Android devices, I still actually miss Android, but if you're a first time smart phone user -- iPhones just don't have many flaws -- The only real flaw I can see is that it's not for most power users unless you jailbreak it.'

Just my .02c -- I'd look at the Galaxy Nexus when it comes out tomorrow.

I think activation fee free on Amazon or Wirefly?

I'm a vet to older smartphones, having owned a BlackBerry Storm and the original Motorola Droid, so I'm familiar with the android and blackberry environments. Apple device personality doesn't fit me, nor does its function. iOS is established, straightforward and easy to grasp, but it's not me. Apple is the England to my William Wallace. (I have no qualms with England, for the record smile.gif)
