Christmas Headphones?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've been contemplating upgrading from my current headset, the Tritton AX 720's ( I know, I know ) to one such as the oft recommended ATH-AD 700's, or the Ultrasone Pro 550's and would like your guys' opinions and expertise on this issue. I've read many, many threads on people looking to get a new headset and my biggest question is, at this semi-decent price range would I notice enough of an improvement over my current headset in terms of gaming, music, and just overall sound quality to warrant an upgrade? The 720's and the Astro A40's are the only two headsets I've ever listened to, so i'm not really sure how much better it can get.

If you guys think that a upgrade would give me the improvement i'm looking for:

My budget - $100 - $150.
~ 70% gaming / 30% music.
Gaming - FPS and RPG's.
Music taste - Pretty much everything, but if I had to say I listen to one more then the others, it would be trance / dubstep.
Other - I only plan to use it at home, so style really doesn't matter, just comfort.
I'd also like for others not to be able to hear what i'm listening to if I want to play something loud.
And last, I'd like for some sort of sound isolation, so I don't have to hear my roommate when he's in games calling out signals and stuff while I'm trying to do homework or read.
Oh, and I have a Xonar DG.
I think that should help with some general questions.

Any help or information you guys can give will be very appreciated!

I can't recommend the Senheiser HD 280 Pro's any more. Although these aren't advertised as gaming headphones, they are great for gaming. I've been listening to BF3 with them and they are amazing! Disregard anything with the word 'gamer' on it as it every time is bad quality compared to dedicated music headphones. They can be found for around $90 in some places. thumb.gif

EDIT: They also are EXTREMELY comfortable. thumb.gif

Trance/Dubstep on a bass-light Headphone won't guarantee you a lot of fun I believe. smile.gif
I'll stick to what I have tried: The AT T500.
The closed soundstage coupled with the present but not overpowering bass might be the thing for you. smile.gif
It isn't to demanding to run, it ran off my mobile just fine.
Closed back, Comfortable for anyone except for people with a big head (like me frown.gif )
Also, if possible try out the M35's/M50's (?) If they fit in your budget are gold.
Not much of an audiophile myself but I believe the T500 to be a decent contender. No idea about pricing where you live since I'm thousands of miles away. tongue.gif

You definitely want the Ultrasone Pro 550s and yes they'll be an upgrade to the Tritons and A40s. They have good bass for electronica and a good sound stage for gaming and don't need to be amplified.

Disregard the HD280s being good for gaming, no sound stage.

Don't consider the M50s/30s, no sound stage.

Haven't tried the T500 to say otherwise, but I'm pretty sure it won't fair well against the Pro 550.

Yeah, I wish I had known this when I bought the 720's a few years ago mad.gif They were nice for the convenience of being able to use them on PS3/360/PC which I had bought them for though.

Well, they don't have to be specifically for Trance/Dubstep, since I pretty much listen to everything. How's do the 500's preform in gaming? After a quick check, they're ~$85usd.

I know you said that they'll be an upgrade, but is it that much of an upgrade to warrant spending $150 on the Pro 550's? I think this is just me not knowing how much better they can be, if you can understand that biggrin.gif
I don't necessarily need it to be, as you described in another post, a "bass cannon," for electronica, since I'll use it mostly for gaming. Also, how is the comfort level for these? I've read a few people who say that they're fine for awhile, but that it's a good idea to upgrade the ear pads to make them more comfortable. Have you ever had a chance to use the 720's? I'm just curious from a comparison standpoint.

*edit*
I was just looking at Amazon again, and they decided to bump the price up to $186 for the Pro 550's thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Yes, as with all Ultrasones, comfort can be an issue for some and yes, the PRO550 is a significant upgrade for $150. It's well worth it at $150.

EDIT: mmm....victim of it's own success (as with the M50) resulting in price rise?

Alright, then, I guess I'll have to scrape up some more pennies and get the PRO 550's. Thanks for the recommendations biggrin.gif

Do these need to be burnt in?

Yeah, that's terrible these headphones were once in the 130ish dollar range, now they're up 50 bucks. That's terrible. I'm sure they'll be down by Christmas if you want to wait. They'll pretend it's a Christmas sale, lol.
