Looking for some new cans!

Thread Starter
My friend and I are doing a headphone review series of videos to make up our IB CAS project, and it's my turn to buy the next pair smile.gif... These headphones are going to be used at my computer, replacing my JVC-RX700's because after getting my RE0's, they just aren't doing it for me any more... Anyway, here is ideally what I'm looking for...

Build: I would like a durable, well built pair of full-sized, circumaural headphones for use at my computer.

Comfort: They need to be comfortable for sessions lasting hours at a time, because sometimes I listen to one playlist for a hell of a long time!

Isolation: This isn't important as they will be used in my room...

Sound: I would like them to be a natural sounding pair of headphones like the RE0's, with outstanding clarity. They should be able to handle genres ranging from heavy metal to electronica, and should be able to be driven easily by an Asus Xonar DX sound card without the use of an amp. Also, they will be used for gaming, so a wide and deep sound-stage would be nice...

Price: $100 budget

Headphones that fit my budget that I have been looking at...

Not sure about the Sony MDR-ZX700's but I have the XB-700's (Xtra Base), i assume the ZX are the same build quality etc just tailoed for a different genre.. so here's what I can tell you about the XBs..

Firstly, i think it is going to be very hard to find another set of cans that are as good for the same or less price!
Secondly, they are the most comfortable headphones I've ever put on! It's like they give your head a big hug! I've seen cans for for 5 times the price that aren't as comfy as these!
Thirdly, they are massive, but they are so comfy it doesn't matter! Get yourself to your local retailer and try them on, trust me!

The sound quality is excellent, I use mine for listening to Dubstep, Old Skool D&B, trance, house etc etc and they have not failed to impress me... ever!
I also use them for gaming and am also impressed, clarity is great.

I run them directly from my ASUS P6T onboard sound without any issues whatsoever, they sound better than my speakers by a long shot.

The noise cancellation is good from what I can tell, but then I only use them in the house in a reasonably quiet environment, as a general rule if my OH wants my attention she has to make physical contact!

The lead is flat and never ever tangles no matter what you do with it.

Clearly you can see I really like these, I have reccomnded them to a lot of people, all be it more fans of bass. My only complaint is that lead could be longer!

I assume the ZX's will be just as good!

hmmm sounds pretty chill... I will try and find a store to test them out at... I think I have tried the XB500's on and they are VERY comfortable, however I didn't test their sound quality... :/

Other than lacking bass, the AD700s are everything you've described. They're even bright like the RE0s. Not good for electronica music. Widest Sound stage under 100, that's for sure. Good clarity. Good mids. Good for fast metal.

XB700s are poor for gaming. A lot of bass there, clarity won't be on par with RE0s.

SR850s have some bass a decent sound stage, build quality is okay, comfortability is good.

Ultrasone 580s have a lot of bass, above average clarity. Okay sound stage. Good build quality. Not very comfortable for most people originally because it's very vice grippy. You can stretch them out over a few days though.

Yea... I was really considering the AD700's, and I do REALLY want them, but I need to find them for cheaper, because the cheapest I can get them for in China is $150... :/

Looks like I'm going to have to make a trip to Hong Kong tongue.gif

Like... maybe $10 (US) each way, which includes a taxi ride from my house to the border and then a bus ride to Central in Hong Kong. But I have to go there anyway to meet up with some mates and to buy some computer parts, so I'll make a day of it! smile.gif
