At the very least Piracy should carry a $2000 fine. Most would rather pay for their music/games then pay $2000.

Sadly you lost your remaining credibility here when you said you preferred public lynchings.
I posted this a few pages back and I'll reiterate. I do software development. I work for a relatively small studio. I'm not going to name names because I like having a job but if you know flight simulation you know who we are. I live off of monthly royalties that are directly impacted by how many people pirate vs. buy.
Last night I did a routine check on piracy on one of my products and found over a hundred peers on one torrent. However, this doesn't really matter. I have their IP's and their ISP's. If I wanted to waste time going after them I would. It's estimated that our piracy vs. legitimate user ratio is 3:1.
But it's not worth it. It's more profitable for me personally to spend my time improving my quality of work on a new product than chasing down pennies on an old one.
This is my perspective on piracy in a small market (<100,000 consumers)
