something seems wrong when I oc my new board and cpu

I was giving a p8p67 LE and i5 2500k as an early xmas gift because my old motherboard went belly up on me.
Anyways, I dove into this one and started to play w/ the overclock features (learn quickly this board restricts alot of them in the bios) . However it is the exact same board my buddy is using on his i7 2600k.

Long story short. If I manually over clock my board to say 4.0 or 4.5, everything goes great temps stay nice and cold even under full load and stress testing. However... here is my issue. The cpu at idle never lowers its self back to that 1.6 when just sitting still. It will stay at 4.0 or 4.5, whatever I set it to.

Interestingly enough if I load the AI suite II software and alow the auto config to overclock the system I find that it does work. It will auto config my system to some strange Bclk Frequency and overclock it on its own to about 4.6 and some change. This seems to work and I can watch the cpu on load ramp up as it is supposed to and lower while off load.

Anyone at all have any ideas on what I could be missing or what adjust this in the bios when im doing the oc my self?

Reset all your power saving settings in the BIOS back to default.

Sandy bridge is quite different than other CPUs, it needs all the stuff like C1E enabled to get the most out of your OC - or even OC at all.

Mine throttles fine, and I have all my power saving, throttling, etc settings on their default.

Try resetting your CMOS, and then only changing the vcore and multiplier.

I tried cmos reset, reset all power saving settings, c1e was enabled.
I even went as far just step by step following someones else overclock and it still would not work.
I am pretty sure it was over clocked correctly because we did the same oc to my buddies rig who has the exact same mobo just the i7 k not i5 k , other then that the 2 computers were mirror copies.

I called asus after about 4 hours of fooling w/ it and pulling my hair out. A supervisor at asus ended up telling me to RMA it.. Went to have the board replaced from retailer and they were out of it so I was set up w/ a sabertooth p67.

Came home, updated bios, made sure all drivers were good and windows was happy. Overclocked to 4.5 and ran prime95 overnight. Runs great and my temps never blew past 68c biggrin.gif

Needless to say im a happy camper.
