Wait, they do?

Obviously, I'm still living in 2010. Didn't know about that!

I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. I love my 930 and my Rampage II mobo. I've got a long way to go in terms of power. Especially when I can play games like Crysis 2 completely maxed out with no issues.

I might jump on the next generation of processors though, that's if they are a giant leap forward.

Well like people have said, it was to be expected. My motherboard and processor will in theory do ok for the next couple of years anyway. I am looking at GPU upgrades next when the 7990 comes out.

and you will probably be fine...I was sort of planning to upgrade this year or next spring to either Bulldozer or Sandy Bridge-E once I found out how they performed, but then I realized that my i7 860 is still an awesome CPU...and we all know how BD turned out and I really don't think even SB-E is enough of an upgrade to make it worth it either. Honestly I think it will be a couple years before I upgrade as well unless software actually requires me to do so. If the next Xbox or PS4 has keyboard and mouse support I may not even upgrade at all...it will depend on if I decide I can live without modding. Though it sounds like modding might even come to consoles one day soon too. (note there is mouse and keyboard support for the PS3 now, but the mouse doesn't work like mouse...it works like an analog stick.)

Long live 1366! I plan on staying with my X58 platform until Haswell at the earliest.

Yeah, I have the same base config as you, GA-X58A-OC and an i7 970 and I honestly cannot see what in the hell I would be gaining by moving to SB-E, or even the Ivy Bridge shrink of the same.

Current LGA1366/X58 setup:
  • 2x SATA-3 support - check
  • 2x USB 3.0 support - check
  • 6-core 32nm chips - check
  • best motherboard for sub-zero - check

Possible LGA2011/X79 setup:
  • 4x SATA-3 native support - check
  • 2x USB 3.0 support - check
  • 6-core 32nm chips - check
  • Unofficial PCI-E 3.0 support - check

So what would I gain by going SB-E? Extra 10% in CPU performance and unofficial PCI-E 3.0 while trading for no true sub-zero targeted motherboards and spending 1.2K on a new chip and mobo tongue.gif As is I can clock 4.6GHz+ for 24/7 without much issues, daily I run 4GHz only because I simply do not need more. In fact, I actually do not need more than 3.6GHz but I just like nice round numbers so I run 4GHz.

It's sad how weak the new offerings are, both from Intel and from AMD. I actually ordered another GA-X58A-OC since I just got Phase fixed up so that I can do some sub-zero again without the need to constantly insulate and remove insulation when going between sub-zero and water.
