XFX HD 5770 OC'ed to 980mhz 1440mhz bottlenecked

Thread Starter
When my video card was on stock clock 850mhz 1200mhz battlefield 3 ran at 70-80 fps but when it got overclocked at 940mhz 4400mhz and runs stable?(not too sure but I think it's stable... been running it 6 hours while playing skyrim, temperatures are at 40+c idle and 50+c 90+% load, the fps became 25-30.

my cpu is at stock clock at about 2.6ghz (phenom II x4 810) I'm just wondering how much ghz do I need to stop the bottleneck if it is bottlenecking? smile.gif or should I lower the clock on my gpu a bit?

I've been avoiding to overclock my cpu cause I was planning to try my first time overclocking a cpu with a new motherboard(which will be a long time from now). If I could keep the over clock of my gpu by overclocking my cpu a little bit then I would try overclocking for the first time on my cpu. The only problem is how much overclocking would it need? any help would be appreciated... thanks biggrin.gif

How the heck did you manage to get such a high oc?? I have the msi 6770 and without any voltage increase the max i can oc is to 925/1250. Try taking your cou upto 3ghz and you should be more than fine. I have an athlon x2 250 and it doesn't bottleneck my card as my card during all games runs at 99%.

The processor isn't bottlenecking the card. You've cranked the memory up WAY too high, to the point where performance will start to degrade. Higher overclocks do not necessarily translate into better performance. You've hit an ECC wall on the memory, where instead of just simply producing bad frames/crashing, the memory is trying to correct these bad frames. However, the correction process is not as fast as the clocks, hence the performance degradation.

What's your gpu usage in bf3? With my 5770s overclocked to 1025c/1350m im getting 99% usage across all cards and temps around 70c. Your temps lead me to believe a processor bottleneck exists

Yup thats it. at extreme levels of oc the performance increase decreases. At the beginning the first 100mhz oc on the gpu clock may give you 6fps increase but another 100mhz increase after that previous oc may barely give you an additional 3fps. I'm not kidding, yes even gpus have a limit and beyond that limit the performance just decreases.

At those temps with the stock cooler your gpu usage must be no more than 70%.

I kinda did it gradually until I hit the max at the msi afterburner. other than that... I serviced my video card recently cause it was already full of dust clogs in the heat sinks then I reapplied some thermal grease from cooler master.

I'm just glad it got oc'ed that high biggrin.gif Even I was surprised that overclocking a graphics card was that easy.

Edit:
was tabbing between afterburner and skyrim and I saw the gpu usage was 90-99%(almost maxed the settings but even in low settings it was still at 30+ fps. so I was wondering why)

By the way how did you manage to get such an high overclock and what brand is the card? I have the 6770 and i'd love the card to run at that clock speed:)

Was this oc achieved without a voltage bump?

Congrats on the OC, however lower the memory back down to bring your frames back up biggrin.gif
