Get Insurance!

A friend of mine just had her camera equipment stolen. I had been meaning to take a out a policy on my stuff for months, but that was just the catalyst I needed to get it done. $6,500 worth of camera equipment coverage for ~$85 per year. Homeowners or Renters insurance won't give you the coverage needed. My policy is with State Farm, but I am sure every other insurance company has similar policies. It covers almost everything from accidental damage to theft. Such a small price to pay when compared to replacing an entire kit.

So don't wait. If you don't have coverage- get it. No sense in spending thousands on equipment and not spending a few bucks a month on protecting it.

a BIG +1 to that.

Get a rider put on your home owners or renters insurance and it is super cheap. Good piece of mind. When I dropped my camera on vacation a few months ago it was really nice knowing I could get a new one if it was fubared. (I picked it up and it was only superficial).

See, if you're not shooting professionally, I've seen renters/homeowners cover most claims, but the issue is that you'd be taking out a claim against those policies, and that's just dumb.

$85 a year is pretty no brainer though -- just a personal articles policy or what? I actually networked with someone last weekend that's the owner of an insurance agency and I want to give him my business..

$85 for what kind of a deductible, though? And is there a claim limit before being pegged as high-risk?

Personal articles policy. No deductible.
