PC Game Sales Numbers Discussion. Piracy, Misinformation, Collapse of the Industry.

Thread Starter
I stumbled on a blog post this week while trying to find the total sales numbers on PC games.

I thought I would start this discussion after seeing some comments after Developer GSC closed today.

Had some pretty interesting stuff and manipulation of numbers.

Just some general facts, before I go into the exact numbers

Studies show that over 75% of PC players buy digitally (this seems to be a fairly conservative estimate as well)
Digital outlets, Origin, Steam, D2D, etc, don't generally post their sales data.

the NPD did a study almost 2-3 years ago (reading through another source, most of that data was collected in 2009 as well), and 50% of all PC sales were done digitally. Since then, digital sales have grown quite substantially.

Source: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/gaming/2010/07/22/downloads-account-for-48-percent-of-pc-game/1

It would be very difficult to argue that they aren't at around 70+% nearing 2012.

The blog post looked at numbers that EA reported to have sold over 5 million copies of Battlefield 3, numbers that he calculated seem to add up perfectly to what was reported.
Massive numbers of simultaneous players of Skyrim on Steam that broke records match this as well.

BF3:

Quote:
Xbox 360: 2.2 million
PlayStation 3: 1.5 million
PC: 500,000

If we follow that 75% of sales were made digitally the sales numbers look quite different:

Xbox 360: 2.2 million
PlayStation 3: 1.5 million
PC: 2 Million

Skyrim:

Quote:
Xbox 360: 1,997.215
PS3: 969,454
PC: 555,554

Xbox 360: 1,997.215
PS3: 969,454
PC: 2,222,216

These numbers make a bit more sense when you compare them to the amount of people you see online.

Source: http://www.thegamersblog.com/2011/11/27/understanding-the-numbers-pc-vs-console-sales-figures

So what do you guys think? These theoretical numbers seem to add up to what EA is reporting and what we can assume from seeing the massive amount of people playing Skyrim simultaneously.

Going off these numbers, it is hard to see the industry declining at all, but only gaining market share.

Thoughts?

Good find, a lot of consumers judge by the sales number wether the games are good or not. Apparently there is a lot of hidden stats behind it which it did not counted at all. Digital Online purchases.

PC games are not dead that's for sure! But it's more expensive due to the computer hardwares vs consoles.

I disagree I think PC gaming is just as affordable as console gaming because the games are generally a lot cheaper on PC if you buy from the right place. For example in England I bought Rage £21 on PC compared to around £39 on the console for the exact same game.

I'm talking about hardwares.

$1000-$3000 PC RIG vs $200-$400 consoles.

This is why Xbox, PS3 sales still high because not everyone know how to built a computer or know what's the best setup for gaming. They rather just stick to simple hardwares such as Xbox, PS3, Wii that can play games.

I think in many cases the costs between console and PC gaming are pretty similar, especially for people who would have a computer anyway. Basically it's spend $200-300 for a console or spend $200-$1,000,000,000 for PC upgrades. The PC's ceiling is just a lot taller.

I'd really love to see the online distributers post their numbers like the retail stores.

When people claim that pc gaming is higher; you always find out they have a xbox, ps3 and a basic computer. All of which cost more than my single "gaming" computer. (It does more than gaming.)
I love PC gaming. More so then any console. However I don't care how you slice it there is no way in Earth you can convince me that it's cheaper then console gaming. It's not even close. Only extreme PC users try to argue with adjusted stats that say it is.

Even if the Xbox 360 hardware is old as dirt (which it is) there is no way you will build a gaming PC for 300 bucks that will play Skyrim just as well as it runs on the 360. Another point on that chart to dismiss is the $10 extra console games cost. That used to be true but now almost every major title for PC is selling for 60 bucks as well. I'm willing to bet that in another year tops all will sale for that.

People also like to point out how console users have to spend thousands on an HDTV. Well for one that is not true as you do not HAVE to spend that and buy an HDTV. You could very well play on standard def. Secondly even if you DID buy a HDTV you can't contribute that cost to only the console as I'm positive most people will use that HDTV for regular TV viewing as well. Finally the cost of HDTV's have nose dived. It's pretty easy to get a 32" HDTV for the same price you would pay for a good quality 22" monitor for the PC. Even if you do that I'll have to say that since you always hold the quality of consoles to the fire I'll hold yours and say I'd much rather game on 32" of space then 22".

Xbox live fees should not be counted as you in no way have to have xbox live for console gaming. Even if you do say you have to have it there are plenty of PC only titles that charge 15 bucks a month, so all in all that point is moot.

So with all that said (and I'll bring more into this) lets look at that chart again.

Cost to door I'll agree with. Difference in price = +600 pc
4 years of games that are $10 more on console I do not agree with as most PC titles charge the same. difference in price = 0
4 years of Xbox live fees I do not agree with. Not every console user has it just like not every PC user does MMO's. Difference in price = 0
Incompatible accessories need to be repurchased. What does that mean? I buy accessories for PC more then I do my console. Sorry that's just BS. Difference in price = 0
Upgrading video card. Looks like I'm bashing PC gaming but you have to admit our technology goes much faster, have to agree. Difference in price = +220 pc
Upgrade time for PC and a new console. I'll give the pc this even though it's truthfully not fair. a 6 year old PC will not play Skyrim as well as a 6 year old Xbox 360. Regardless I'll agree with spreadsheet. Difference in price = +182 PC

After that you get the same points that are complete BS again that simply tack on some imaginary fee that pro pc users used against the console. it's unfair because the can and does have counter charges for just about all of them.

So in general if you use some common sense PC gaming comes out to be $1102 more expensive.

Sorry that's a long post but that chart was just absolutely insane and it's obviously biased towards PC gaming.
Then you add a $400 PC to the console.

You do not need a console if you're a pc gamer.

You still need a pc, even if you prefer console games, to do all the other things you need.

edit: I can has spelling
