Problems with my nvidia GT 540m

Hey guys im using a Dell XPS L502X

The Configuration is as follows:
Intel i7 2630 QM CPU @ 2.0 GHz with turbo boost
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GT 540m GPU with latest firmware version 285.62
Windows 7 Premium 64 bit OS

Iv been facing massive performace issues with all my games. I get a heavy lag for COD:Black Ops, MW2, F1 2011, GTA IV and Skyrim if i run it on 1920X1080 resolution.

i recently installed NFS The Run. i was running it at 1600X900 with all advanced setting set at medium but i started to get a lag and am getting a fps of 10 ~ 15 whenever there are a lot of AI interactions (traffic, cops, opponents and such.) i reduced the resolution to 1366X768 with all advanced setting set to low and im still facing the same problem. fps dropped to 10 when im in the middle of a race with heavy AI interactions.

I face this problem for F1 2011 and GTA 4 also, game runs smoothly with minimal AI interactions.

3D mark vantage yielded a score of P4395 with GPU score 3608 and CPU score 12692...

What seems to be the problem??

Tested FPS Scores:
COD: black ops : 24 fps on 1600X900 with max settings
COD: mw2: 24 fps on 1600X900 with max settings
F1 2011: 18 fps on 1600X900 with medium settings
FIFA 12: 60 fps on 1920X1080 with max settings...

How do i get a smoother display?? Will overclocking help??

I wouldn't advise OC'ing on a Laptop unless you know what you are doing, and also have some sort of aftermarket cooling.

Secondly, you'd have to be bonkers to think you'd get decent FPS on a Laptop with Games like Skyrim. But its Odd that CoD is running so badly, but by the state of Infinity Ward and Activision, the last CoD that was released on PC that wasn't a Console port was World At War...

on a lower resoultion i do get a decent fps of 24.. but only some games like nfs the run, F1 2011, GTA IV lag badly when the game is "busy" so to speak.. ii play skyrim pretty smoothly on 1600X900. i get a 24fps frame rate.. i dont understand why the lag comes in on AI interactions.. with an i7 processor and this card set for peak performance i really didnt think that i wud be facing this problem

Is your laptop set to power saving mode? You should make sure it's on high performance.

ai interactions is usually dependent on the cpu power and what load its being put under.
your processer has ample power for those games.
I for one think its just your dedicated gpu.
the 540m just isnt that powerful of a gpu.
perhaps if the card is in an express slot u could switch it out?

Personally i don't believe 24FPS is decent performance! tongue.gif

I digress, laptop GPU's are always much less powerful than their desktop cousins, mainly for power consumption and Heat. The Card in question is not a top of the line at all, according to Tom's Hardwares GPU Hierarchy the 540M is equivalent to a 7900GT (Desktop) GPU. Which is pretty under powered for COD, Skyrim and GTA
