If you have a new smartphone, often times they have a decent DAC inside of them. My phone has a wolfson DAC that sounds pretty damn amazing for a phone. I would just buy an SD card, toss it in your smartphone and listen off there.
The Sansa Clip+ and Clip Zip (and Fuze FWIR) all have MicroSDHC card slots for expandable memory.
Cowon's newer players don't have expandable storage. I believe their D2 and D2+ did. The C2, S9 and J3 are limited to internal capacity. In effect, a Sansa with a 32GB MicroSDHC would have greater capacity than all but the 64GB models for cheaper
