BD is what? 1-2 years NEWER than the Phenom II's and it still can not outperform them while having 2 more cores. Sure, it can in certain areas.. but it should be outperforming them in ALL areas by a good margin.. in which case it is not, not even close. Especially when compared whilst running at the same speed...
You really need to just let biased people be biased. It is impossible to convince them what a fail the first revision of BD is. I have tried.
I suggest Intel because it is going to yield much better results for the price. However, if you must stay with AMD.. I would suggest going with a Phenom II or wait until the second revision of the BD chips are released.

I am curious, as I am sure the OP is, why you would suggest the phenom over BD? Price?

Because the current release of BD is not worth the price considering their performance. Also considering the older Phenom II chips can outperform them in quite a few areas. I suggest waiting until the next revision of BD if he wishes to pursue a BD chip.

I am not a BD basher or fanboy of any sort.

Thread Starter
wow thanks for all the replys people. I certainly did not intend to turn this into an intel vs amd thread.

As stated i'm only looking for some good options for my situation. To be honest with what i do these days - some promgramming (include DB and app server - but very rare these days since the new addition to the family got here), surf, decompress zip files, video and picture editing, etc.

I don't really need the latest and greatest - although a 2700k would be nice. I just want someting that won't barf when alot of apps are open and will still be responsive. Hence why I went to price out AMD since they seem to offer the most horse power to price.

Realistically i can even go to a q6600 and it would feel alot better then the current c2d.
I did consider the x4 chips but for ver little more i can go to the x6 or fx.

Again thanks for all the replys.

Well that's the thing, it's Intel that's offering the best bang for the buck at the moment, which is the 2500k. Why would you go FX when they're no faster than the Phenom IIs, and consumes far too much power? But as it stands now, NOTHING beats the 2500k price/performance wise. AMD is not a lot of bang for the buck at the moment, at least not the BD chips.

Also OP, check out this thread where you can see that BD is no improvement over Phenom: http://www.overclock.net/t/1156546/960t-vs-fx4100 (FX--4100 vs 960T)

This.

A i5-2500K is the best bang for the buck. With a $300 budget I suggest you get a used i5-2500K and then that should leave you with enough money left over to get a decent motherboard with some RAM brand new.

i would go with the 8120. With a 6950, 6970, 6990 .. the 8 core fx's really fly. They match or beat intel's performance in games, if this is what you are using it for.

http://alienbabeltech.com/main/amd%E2%80%99s-fx-8150-and-crossfire-scaling-%E2%80%93-bulldozer-part-2-the-conclusion/all/1

the 8150 at 4.4 ghz matches or beats a 3.8 ghz i7 920 in gaming with a 6970. at 4.8-5.0ghz it will easily beat it.

my 3dmark 11 score is also untouched on extreme ^^, not even a 3960x ocd with a 6990 beats it (X4002)
