Too late to buy 6970CF? - Page 3

post #21 of 37
I just bought two 6950/70s to crossfire at a similar price to what you are buying. No hesitation. I will also be going Eyefinity. The dual 6970s will be plenty fast enough for nearly all games until DX12 cards come out (in 2013), that's almost a guarantee. Once DX12 cards become available, people will be replacing their old video cards faster than they were replacing Phenom 1 cpus.

They're not fast enough to get 60+ fps in high end games on ultra, games like metro, crysis. In truly eye candy rich games, you'll be plodding along around 30fps with eyefinity on.

Yep, some fine examples for you these are from my watch list:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HD-6970-2GB-/160688993352?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item2569cf7448

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MSI-AMD-Radeon-HD-6970-R6970-2PM2D2GD5-2GB-GDDR5-256bit-PCI-Express-Video-Card-/140660201724?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item20c00058fc

Sad how people sleep on these auctions and don't realize people are luckily sniping these at low prices. And this is in the last month, now imagine in Jan when the 7970 comes out, you could easily expect $200 shipped auctions, plus there will be more people selling their cards due to upgrades.

So for the love of cash just wait!

Tahiti is supposed to be one of the most significant leaps for ATI in years.
Hell, even if it isn't, you'll probably regret it unless you have money to burn.

AMD also claimed the same with the Bulldozer. And we all know how that turned out.
Honestly if I were the OP and I had $500 I would go with the 6970's now and look into the 79xx series this time next year when they come off their high horse and they price them more reasonable.
There may be hd 6970's for sale for less (Ebay auctions, Amazon used sellers) but you can't say that $250 for a hd 6970 isn't a Very good deal.

No.

6970 = 7870
6950 = 7850

7000 series are still faster due to more overclock headrooms.

To be honest, the difference between settings on "ultra" and "high" is negligible. Also, if my framerate is in the low 40s, that's good enough for me, it's still pretty smooth, and if I'm really into the game, I don't notice the framerate anyway. However, I stilll have yet to play a game with my crossfired 6970/50 where the framerates and detail level is "unplayable" by my standards.

And a sidenote - I don't like Crysis. I don't find it that fun. Every few weeks I try to play it just because this forum makes me feel like I should like it. But I'm finding that just because the game is a benchmark standard, doesn't make it any good. I have yet to play Metro, but I like the trailer and will buy it to play around in it. I see it go on sale for near $10 every once in a while, so when I get a chance i'll bite.

^^You missed the point. They're not fast enough to run with eye candy on. Hell, one card is not enough to avg 60fps in Metro at 1080P, so how could you expect a pair to handle 3 times that resolution? You need 3 cards to start getting into the fun zone with 3 screens.

Aren't Crysis 2 and metro 2033 Nvidia titles? They are hardly optimized at all for AMD cards. If at all. So why would you include them?

Metro 2033 & Crysis are terrible games anyways. Garbage gameplay & great visuals that have NOTHING going for them. If you based your Rig on these 2 games alone then you wasted money. Far better games in this world
