Whats underneath the fins in the back?

Thread Starter
I am planning on rmoving the chipset HS but not sure whats underneath the fins that the heatpipe runs into.
Is it just for cooling the chipset or is cooling something hot beneath it? If so whats it sitting on top of that needs special cooling?

Those fins disapate the heat from the chipset and the PWM area, I'm sure that you can remove the pipe and leave the fins

A heatpipe works by moving heat from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. So the tail end of a heat pipe would never be a heat source. (in theory)

Ok so when I remove the chipset cooler and attached heat pipe I do not need to put any additional coolers over the area of tail end of the heat pipe.

Thanks....I have been delaying removing this because I wasnt sure what was underneath the tail end.

You could do what dfi do and have small heatinks on all the mosfets

That shouldn't be a problem. The area near the tail end of the heatpipe will be cooler once it is gone. Thermodynamics say that heat will move in this manner:

chipset --> heatpipe --> fins --> surrounding air

When the heatpipe assembly is removed heat is no longer being displaced to that location from the chipset. So in theory that area will be cooler than it was before. If the mosfets (or whatever else is there) was fine with the added heat from the chipset they will certainly be ok without it.

Good to know...note I have no air movement behind my Phase Head so the air will be somewhat stagnate. Of course I dont keep a lid on the case either

I would double check what is under there once you remove it....I say this because my P5WD2 Premium has a stand alone passive heatsink in that exact same area......I thought I remembered seeing that it had to do with Stack Cool, but I can't find anything in the manual about it.

I mention this because you will have no airflow over that area......

Agreed, i have a cooler in the same place near the CPU.

Does'nt get crazy hot so i think some passive stick on's would be ok, or see if you could nick someone's A8N cooler off a broke mobo
