Advice on first time OCing - i5 2500k

Thread Starter
EDIT: (For someone who may find this sometime)
Got a Hyper 212+, and temps idle are 27-34c. Prime95 (OCed to 4.2, 1.312v) maxes out on 65-70 after running it for about 30 minutes or so. Works brilliantly. I seriously wonder if throwing in that Intel heatsink into an i3 I got and compare the temps to the i3's heatsink cause the difference is so large.
END EDIT

I think I've got the basics for settings down (Using a P8P67 board) for light OCing and I'd like to send it through a stability test on Prime95 but the temperate after about 5 minutes of it is a steady 95c+ and I'm not sure if that's normal, and I'm not exactly willing to leave Prime95 up with that high temps. I am using the stock cooler, but it had practically the same temps in Prime95 at stock w/ turbo to 3.7.

I've manually set the Core voltage to 1.3v and it's fluctuating between 1.285 - 1.3, is that alright, and also is a goal of OCing having as low VCore as you can get while having stability? I plan on probably limiting the OC to 4.3 until I get a aftermarket cooler, would that be fine?

Thanks for your help guys, I really appreciate it.

Your voltage is fine but you need to replace your cooler ASAP. The stock cooler just will not cut it for overclocking.

Although I believe Sandy Bridge is rated to the low 80s'C ideally you should strive to keep the temperatures below 75'C if at all possible. A Cooler Master Hyper+ 212 is a $25 investment that will drastically lower your temperatures and enable you to push higher clocks.

95'C is a very worrisome load temperature for the CPU. I would back off right now until you get the cooler since you're risking damage to the processor at those temps.

In summary, stop right there! The stock Intel cooler will not cut it for all but the most modest of OCs, and above 80'C is dangerous territory to be in.

It seems to load typically at 60-70 when doing most things, but when I first ran Prime95 I was like WHAAAT. I will plan on getting a cooler sometime but probably not till after Christmas since I just blew a lot on the build.

Make sure the stock cooler is mounted firmly on all 4 pins. 95c+ on stock cooler is not normal.

Listen to this advice. Even on the stock cooler, I used to get 85C after 10 min prime95 with a 4.4ghz overclock. Check the pushpins and replace the thermal paste.

Ahhh yeah I really didn't think about the cooler not being on properly, I'll go ahead and reapply some paste on it immediately, thanks guys. Honestly I don't know what I'd do without OCN biggrin.gif

It still seems to be up rather fast, 2 minutes and it's hit 90c but it's now only fluctuating 91-93 area, before it would rise up to like 98 max.

~Nvm core speeds only 3.5ghz must have reset the BIOS since I forgot the fan cable when I first launched it up. =[
Again it hasn't seen these temperatures outside of Prime95 though which I find weird.

time to get an after market cooler me thinks, thoose temps are just too high. if you want a decent budget cooler go fo the Cooler Master hyper 212+ which should allow you to OC to atleast 4.5GHz

I found my stock cooler is crap even at stock speeds but i do live in a hot country thumb.gif

BTW P95 would utilise 100% of your CPU so thats why you get such high temps using prime but not outside of it

Well still in comparison to others, it is relatively high =/
Owe well, for now I just threw on an old CPU fan on the top since I only have 1 intake/1 exaust. See if that helps and it rarely hits load anyways so I'll be fine until I hop on the cooler train.

Could it possibly be a temperature reading problem? I have the Asus AI Suite reading at 10c lower then Realtemp constantly, even with Prime95 the Asus temp is only 80, while Realtemp is 90. A little ease of mind seeing this.
