That was 5 letters, but anyways...

You can cram more cores in the same amount of space. Graphics workloads are very parallel friendly, so unlike desktop processors, that actually translates into more performance. The lower heat and power consumption from the lower voltage required to switch on transistors leads to higher clock speeds as well.

Basically the gigantic jump comes mostly from more cores. Not architecture changes.

there's no way this thing can be as fast as a 6990. it only has 25% more shaders with 12-13% higher clocks than a 6970. performance benefits would come from xdr2 ram, but ati decided to stick with gddr5 and bumped capacity to 3gb. anyways i think current offerings are fine, but it'll be interesting to see how low prices get with the 28nm fab. i'm guessing 7970 will go for $300-350 when prices stabilize

It's a new architecture.

HD 6970 has 1536 while the 5870 has 1600. AMD made the shaders more efficient with the hybrid 6xxx series. The 7xxx series is going to be the full child here so the number of shaders shouldn't be an indicator for performance compared to current AMD cards.

If anything that's what it will be. The only reason AMD can price their cards higher is due to the 6 or so month lead.

I vote none of this matters, because all the PC games that come out are console ports and the four that aren't console ports don't justify spending 1000.00 dollars on vidya cards.

Die size is not the deciding factor on performance.
