You should try the demo first I would say.

It has its own default codec. I tried it in april of this year. Youtube did not recognize the videos from the default. But I had also recorded some with another codec just to see. Those were fine. I would give the demo a try first.

Thanks for that RainMotorsports.

So does Dxtory compress the video unlike FRAPS? I would like to have small files so I don't use up a lot of space on my 500GB HDD.

Just out of curiosity, how much space would a 15 minute 1080p video recording on a game like BF3 take up in GB uncompressed and compressed (approximate)?

Thanks biggrin.gif

for encoding i use mediacoder mp4 h264 bitrate 5000, amazing quality

try not to use gpu encoding since the quality sucks at the same bitrates, faster yes, crap yes

I heard that Dxtory can encode as well.

How much space would a 15 minute 1080p video at 30FPS take up?

Thanks you.

So should I just get Dxtory?

Wow, got here just in time biggrin.gif

DxTory is better than fraps in every single possible way imo. I bought a license for DxTory with a friend of mine (we went halves) and the key works for both of us.

Dxtory has so much more customization and causes much less of an in-game fps hit, which is what I hated about fraps. Also, if your in-game fps ever went below 60 with fraps, it'd get locked down to 30 while recording. DxTory allows you to have any in-game fps while recording the video in 30 fps (or whatever you choose).

I'm not sure why dxtory is still relatively unknown compared to fraps, when almost everyone who uses dxtory on a modern pc believes it's superior. It could be because dxtory is a japanese program or something (although you can choose an English version, if it's not English by default).

EDIT: I don't see much point in recording at 1080p when Youtube 1080p quality is so crap atm, so all my videos are in 720p. For reference though, a 15 minute 720p video of BF3 at 30fps takes up about 35gb of space, give or take a few gb's.

I am really considering Dxtory.

Also since I am buying a MSI GTX 580 GPU that comes with Afterburner, do you think I should just use MSI Afterburner and save my self ~ $40?

I might as well use it if I get it, right? Has anyone had experience with MSI Afterburner and maybe could tell me some pros and cons?

Thanks.

Never used Afterburner, but the majority of PC youtubers that I've seen use dxtory I've noticed.

Why get a 580 with the AMD 7 series a month or two away though D:

I am building in January and would like to keep things Intel/NVIDIA based. I also don't currently have a gaming computer and my school holidays are coming up and I would like to have my own system to game on. I also might as well buy now since the next time I will be rebuilding a PC will be in 3 years when I finish my schooling (year 12). Also I don't really want to wait for the next best thing or I will keep on waiting (I wait for the 7000 series, then I will wait for Ivy-Bridge, then I will wait for the 600 series and then its Windows 8, etcetera).

Can MSI Afterburner record your own microphone and game audio at the same time, this is the major thing that I need since I will be recording commentaries.

MSI Afterburner is a good overclocking tool, but imo its recording functionality is limited. I wasn't very satisfied with the MJPG compressed output files, but if I'm not wrong the new version lets you record uncompressed too. I bought Fraps long ago and I've tried many other programs in the meantime, yet none of them offered the same functionality and ease of use.

It will let you choose 1 audio source, however there's a workaround for that. You can set up Stereo Mix as a recording device.
