[Tigerdirect] Ultra U12-40659 Carbon X4 Multi-Socket VGA Cooler - $15 FS

Thought this was a pretty good deal for an aftermarket VGA cooler. I have one installed on my ASUS HD6850. I paid $30. It's a rebranded Xigmatek Bitfrost ($40 at Newegg) as far as I can tell.

It is not listed under the compatible coolers so I don't think so ,but who knows it may. Try checking and measuring the spacing for mounts on your card and compare it to this cooler

It's an older cooler so the 460 wouldn't be on the comparability list. The manual shows support for 6800,7800,7900,8800,9600, GTX280, and GTX260 for Nvida cards. The ATI 6850 wasn't on the list either but it fits perfectly.

I bought this cooler because the ASUS stock cooler, although good cooling wise, had an annoying high pitch noise. This cooler is pretty damn quiet compared to stock

To the OP, did you encounter any kind of compatibility issues with the power connector on this cooler and your card, as mentioned in this article? You make no mention of it, so I'm trying to figure out if maybe the connector has since been revised.

This is a super quick how-to guide from Frostytech on modding the Ultra Products U12-40659 Carbon X4 multisocket VGA cooler fan power cable so it can be connected to a normal sized 3-pin fan header common to most videocards and motherboards.
Quote:
The problem some users will encounter with this heatsink is that the Ultra Carbon X4 draws power from a miniature 4-pin PWM electrical connector that looks like a WOL connector with 4-pins, or a compact CD-ROM SPDIF cable from the days of IDE. Since a good many videocards only have regular sized 3-pin fan headers , the Ultra Carbon X4 VGA heatsink is slightly less than universal. Faced with this peculiar installation roadblock, most affected users will just return it; savvy users know they can make up a quick jumper cable.

Other than that concern, good find. Inexpensive cooler that will probably work on a variety of cards. REP+ to you.

The cooler has a 4-pin fan connector. It plugged directly in my Asus HD6850. thumb.gif It also comes with small heatsinks to fit on VRMs and memory chips.

I just bought one the other day at CompUSA (Retail outlet of TigerDirect) here in el paso and it still has the 4 pin connector (looks to be a standard 4 pin fan connector ) -- My GPU ( a Sapphire 5770) has a 2 pin connection on the card (since the card handles the fan speed controls it only needs a + and ground connection) So today I will be removing the 2 pin from the original fan and creating a cable from the 2 pins of the 4 pin connector to the 2 pin plug off of the original fan ( the bearing on the stock fan is going out and the card is out of warranty) -- thanks to the article I should be able to get the proper pin wiring -- The original problem is that the 4 pin has 4 black wires so you have to figure out which is which before you can adapt a cable but that article gives the needed info (will be testing first to ensure the wiring hasn't changed just in case )

Also On my 5770 it is going to need part of the radiator fins trimmed off since the one section extends too far toward the back end of the card so the dual DVi connectors block it so it will not fit but snipping the radiator fins and moving the one heat pipe up to clear the connector block should work out (since I have plenty of room even if it takes up another slot space in the case) -- Looks like it is going to need some modifications to work on a 5770 but should be doable ! At least there are 4 mounting holes in the proper place to attach it to the PCB board (Just a bit more time consuming than I originally planned on )

But to answer your question -- No the wiring has not changed and it does have the 4 black wires and 4 pin connector as described in the article so be prepared to make some adjustments !
