another new programmer with lots of questions

Thread Starter
i've really been interested in pc's and software lately, and i want to start programming. i've decided to use Java as my first language. i'm a high school student, and this is just a hobby i'm doing on the side. probably won't ever be a pro, but hopefully i'll make something worthwhile one day smile.gif. anyway i've got some questions?

1. would it be worth it to do a Wubi install of Ubuntu 11.10 for programming? i don't want to try partitioning yet because i'm scared i could mess up my hard drive. i have no external drive big enough to back up my data, and buying a new internal drive isn't feasible right now considering the inflated prices from the flooding.

2. i've read that Java can be used to develop Android apps. is this true?

3. do specs matter when programming? my current desktop i'm using until i build a new one this summer or summer of 2013 has: Athlon X2 2.0GHz, 2gb RAM, Windows Vista, can get the rest of my specs if needed.

4. can Java be used to develop any type of program (games, media players, converters, social media apps, etc)?

5. probably a dumb question, but what program(s) do i download in Windows Vista to start programming in Java?

6. any good online reading material? i already downloaded the Blue Pelican Textbook i saw in another topic and i'm gonna check out my local library this week.

to anyone who takes the time to read this and help me, thanks.

For a headstart:
Download iTunes and type in CS106A or watch it in YouTube. Then download Eclipse. thumb.gif

thanks for the video. never knew iTunes had this stuff smile.gif. also, is this the Eclipse you are talking about?

http://eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/java.php
post #4 of 23
Yes thats the eclipse he's talking about. Not recommended for beginners though.

1. would it be worth it to do a Wubi install of Ubuntu 11.10 for programming? i don't want to try partitioning yet because i'm scared i could mess up my hard drive. i have no external drive big enough to back up my data, and buying a new internal drive isn't feasible right now considering the inflated prices from the flooding.

You don't actually need linux to develop in java. I'd stick with windows.

2. i've read that Java can be used to develop Android apps. is this true?

Yes, Java is the main language for android apps.

3. do specs matter when programming? my current desktop i'm using until i build a new one this summer or summer of 2013 has: Athlon X2 2.0GHz, 2gb RAM, Windows Vista, can get the rest of my specs if needed.

Specs only matter if you're doing a large scale project. If you're just learning your setup is more than adequate.

4. can Java be used to develop any type of program (games, media players, converters, social media apps, etc)?

Yes, java is versatile in that regard.

5. probably a dumb question, but what program(s) do i download in Windows Vista to start programming in Java?

You need to search for the 'java jdk'. Install that and you can start typing up code in notepad and running them via the windows cmd.

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-6u29-download-513648.html

6. any good online reading material? i already downloaded the Blue Pelican Textbook i saw in another topic and i'm gonna check out my local library this week.

I like the official java tutorial from Sun.

http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/index.html

You can start with that and just proceed with the other chapters.

I would suggest at bare minimum downloading Notepad++ to code in. I would however suggest getting something with a built in compiler. The first IDE I used was jGrasp which is pretty nice for beginners lightweight and pretty easy to understand how to use but if you want to jump right in as stated before Eclipse is a great IDE for Java development.

As a Java n00b, I've found DrJava to be a good idea. Very intuitive to use which lets you concentrate on other apsects (like the code).

http://www.javavideotutes.com/

This guy makes some great video tutes. Really knows his stuff. I've emailed him a few times and always had friendly / helpful replies.

Also, Programming With Java for Dummies is a great book to skim read.
