[help needed] Questions about Intel SRT

Thread Starter
Ok, so I have an Intel i5-2500k CPU with a z68 chipset mobo which I know is the minimum req's to be able to use Intel's SRT.. My question is, I'm using a green HDD (5900 rpm) as opposed to something with a 7200 rpm drive, although my HDD is SATA 3.0/64 MB cache, I wanna know if its worth using SRT on it because of the lower spindle speeds (and I don't know what other aspects of it is inferior to higher performance HDDs), or is it better if i just get a 500gb and a 60gb SSD for cache and use the old 2TB for bulk data (I know this is better, but it cost more money and I just wanna get an SSD for now so, lemme know what u think about the former option..

click links for product pages of the hardware I'm talking about:

my current hard drive: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX32060

the SSD im planning to get: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX34786

500gb HDDs im considering for the latter option: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33918 - or - http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX32594

my mobo (just in case): http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33407

and for other info about my specs, pls just refer to my build log found on my siggy..

Thank you for reading up to this point.. and thank you in advance for any helpful info.. cheers..

Just use the ssd for your os and hdd for storage, you will lose performance using smart cache

I've considered that, but in order to satisfy my needs, Iwould have to have at least a 240GB SSD (preferably 2 x 120GB on raid 0) for my boot drive since i have many programs installed at any one time (cuz just using a small SSD for OS and installing my other programs on my mechanical drive I think is just pointless).. and, frankly, I can't shell out for that kinda cash right now - or within the foreseeable future for that matter..

so really, SRT is what I would want to go for (I'm kinda a 'price/performance' junkie - just look at my build), I'm just afraid that I will bottleneck the SSD with my current HDD so I'm asking you guys here if it will.. I wanna consider all options with my current components first before even beginning to consider my latter option (500gb caviar black or barracuda XT with 60gb Force GT cache)..

so I guess what I'm asking is, will the slower spindle speeds bottleneck the SSD caching, or it does not matter and I will still get optimum performance boost possible when using SRT..

so yea.. evo.gif

I'm not speaking from experience. Although I'm using SRT, I still have a pure SSD OS drive. BUT my guess would be overall SRT + 5900rpm HDD would be preferable to a single 7200rpm HDD.

For booting the OS there shouldnt be much difference between SRT + 7200rpm and SRT + 5900rpm. Intel's smart caching algorithm should realize you use those same files very frequently and never dump them from the cache. You should end up achieving near SSD speed for bootup.

But for other stuff, like what apps and games you use less frequently, it's not going to be able to hold everything in it's 64gb SSD read buffer. So when it doesn't find a file stored in the SRT buffer it will have to go to HDD to read it. In those instances you will be limited to the speed of your 5900rpm drive.

I have that same Force GT in Raid0 and that would be a waste of a drive to use it just for cache. how many programs do you install that you need 240gb?

Force 3 and force GT here are priced round about the same, and if the force GT goes on sale, its even lower - and it goes on sale often, specially this holiday season.. so, why the hell not right? right now, im using right around 120GB for programs and OS.. I just font wanna limit myself to that just because that's what I'm currently using, i need room to work with.. so, yea..

Sounds reasonable. If it works for you, do it. There's nothing bad about it besides prices of hdds
