Need help building a cheap gaming PC under $100

Thread Starter
I'm wanting to build a cheap alternative gaming desktop to play mostly indie games and other games like CS:S (or CS:GO), Oblivion, Half-Life 2--doesn't matter if i have to play in the lowest settings possible.

I already have the following:
-Monitor 1440x900
-keyboard and mouse
-Antec 500w PSU

Things I need to buy:
-GPU
-CPU
-RAM
-HDD (minimum 100gb)
-Mobo

Which ones should i buy for all under $100?

You really need to bump up the budget, or looks around for used parts.

Check out Craigslist. I see some Pentium 4 machines for around $100.

Sometimes I see a CoreDou or Athlon ll x2 machines for around $125.

They will all be using integrated GPU's.

None of the systems are custom. They are all Dell or HP Small Form Factor PC's from 2005 or 2006.

But $100 is ruff. You could probably swing a decent used CPU and Mobo for that price. But that will be it.

Depending on if the Alternate PC had PCI-E slots and can use DDR3.

You possible have to reinstall windows if you move the HDD over. I would advise leaving the HDD in your current machine.

Also, I was able to play CSS and HL2 with a Dell GX280 with 3.2GHz Pentium 4, 2GB of DDR2 Ram and an HD2400 Pro. That was a $125 system.

Like I said above, check out Craigslist or you local online market. Find a decent Dell Desktop, swing for a Core2Dou model if money permits. Then find an older ATI or Nvidia card. One that supports DX10. That will do just fine for those games, plus may keep you within your budget.

It won't be a BF3 monster, lol. But you already have a machine for that!

One question, one not play those games on your current rig?

wouldn't that be too much work? taking everything apart, reapplying thermal paste every time, risk of damaging components.

you might be able to get one or two things you need for $100, best to just look around ebay or the freebie section here

Yeah, you need at least $150 to at least put something together. If you buy all parts used, you can get a:
Athlon II X2 ~$30
AM3 Mobo ~$40
DDR3~ $15
ATI 4850 ~ $50
120gb HDD~ $20

That totals to about $155.

May aswell sell the keyboard, mouse, and PSU, and buy a console (and if your monitor isn't HDMI a VGA cable too) at that price.

I'm guessing the HDD alone would tear a $100.00 bill all to pieces with the way HDD prices are right now. Although Newegg does have decent deals on recertified HDDs around 160GB for $25.

This. Compared to $100 "PC" it would probably run better.
