MAME PC

Not sure if this is the right place to start this thread or not, but my friend had an idea today...

He wants to build an Arcade machine that has lots of different games to choose from. My first thought was to build or buy a cabinet and install a mini ITX inside. Throw in some big controllers and call it a day.

I started to look around newegg, and I really don't know much about the Intel/ION parts. Are they faster than AMD's E-350? I'm sure it wouldn't take much to run a MAME, especially if I can find one that runs in linux.

I'm sure this has been done 100's of times before, so any experience in this matter would be a big help.

Thanks!

Helpful article, but it's dated 2009. I want to avoid a Windows OS, as I don't want the system to have a hard drive. I want everything to be on a USB flash drive to save costs.

I have built a MAME PC box, it runs under Windows. (Sorry, I am a noob at Linux, I went with Win7)

My MAME box required a HDD, because MAME .144, (latest version as of January 2012) all of the ROMs, CHDs, etc. come to a whopping 328GB.
