[Gentoo] Installation help needed - Grub

Thread Starter

Trying to install Gentoo linux 64bit. I have been following the handbook, However I keep getting error 15.  I have gone back in checked the name of the kernel the path and all that jazzy stuff. I just can not seem to get this thing to boot. So what i need is either someone who can teamview in and help/fix the install. or some really good ways to check for what my problem would be.

i have actually installed from the livecd. however it leaves you stuck with KDE (which i do not want) and with no users. so i ditched that install and started from scratch.

so let me know what you all might suggest as most of my searching for grub error 15 brings me back to the same stuff. so i am either missing a very simple step or i jacked up the install.

i dont know exactly what error 15 is off of the top of my head, but it definitely sounds familiar. When installing grub make sure you do

cat /proc/mounts >> /etc/mtab
grub-install --no-floppy --recheck /dev/sda

(where sda is your disk). Also make sure you have the boot symlink

cd /boot
ln -s . boot

if you can give more details about what it says i might be able to help a little better ... i don't remember what error15 is smile.gif

Thread Starter

Sorry guys i did not have a chance to come back and update the tread. I solved the problem. What my issue was is that i used the short name of the kernel i used linux-3.0.6-gentoo instead of pointing it to kernel-genkernal-x86-3.0.6-gentoo.

I now have a minimal install of linux gentoo.

I read that guide like 20 times easy before i figured out what the issue was. Thank you tho.
