Bricked iPhone 3GS restore?

Thread Starter
I have a friends iPhone 3GS here and I think it may be currently bricked... It was previously jailbroken.

The phone displays the icons of the USB cable and the iTunes logo suggesting you need to plug it into your PC/Mac. However, upon trying to restore it just hangs for a period of time then displays the message of "An error has occured, error code 1603 / 1604 / 1015" I believe both error codes have been displayed on different occasions.

I have tried all of the "Hold the home and lock button down for 10 seconds" methods of resetting but thus far, nothing has worked for me. I think a more radical process of restoring may be needed. If there is any further information you require then please ask. Any ideas or thoughts?

I had just been through many agonizing months of this (actually was maybe a few days for me and many many days for my father).

If you friend tried to upgrade to iOS 5.0 (I assume he was) and didn't save HSH blobs, you're in real trouble. The bigger problem comes when he needs to unlock his phone. If he's not on the carrier the phone was meant for then you could have serious problems. If your iphone is a world phone and doesn't have any particular service predesigned, then you may be in luck.

To get to the activation screen, you're gonna' need to download redsnow, IPSW 5.0 and install redsnow. After that, you're going to have to restore the phone or kick it out of the boot loop. If successful, you'll get to the activation screen. If you have an AT&T sim card there's a split chance you'll be able to either activate it or the radio is messed up and you can't even connect to the AT&T tower. If that's the case it's completely messed up.

If you're on T-Mobile, you're a goner if you don't have HSH blobs saved. We ended up bringing ours to a professional and he tried everything. He ended up telling us it was bricked so my dad went and bought another 3GS for him, a 32GB version and this one is unlocked and jailbroken on 4.1

So yeah, mess with redsnow to hopefully fix your problems.
