Issues OC'ing with 1090T

Thread Starter
I know there are gobs of threads out there but I've done a lot of searching and not having much luck getting a good overclock.

I have:
1090T Hyper 212+
G.Skill Ripjaws 2x4Gb 1600 version GBRL
Gigabyte 990fxa-UD3
650watt Antec PSU
Sapphire HD 6870

I having trouble getting above 3.8G. BSODs only, using returning either 0x1E or other that specify some general hardware failure but nothing specific. I though BSOD usually resulted from memory issues, while black screens and the like where voltage or CPU issues. I can run Prime95 for a few hours (then I stop it) at ~3.8 or lower, but above that one core will stop with "fatal rounding error, hardware failure detected" within a couple minutes. The core differs each time, usually 3, 5, or 6. I then stop it. Temps are not going above 45C when that happens. At OC around 3.8, I can run for a few hours and never break ~53C, without errors. No problems gaming or anything with that. Fresh install of Win 7x64 Professional. I've tried two different sets of RAM (intending to use 16GB in the end) always in channels as the manual recommends. I hit the 3.8 wall regardless of using Multi only or using lower multi and higher frequency.

I've not gone the traditional route of OCing currently because I am not confident that my memory is not the issue. I feel like I need a stable is underclocked memory to start with. I started with memory clocks on AUTO, then moved to setting the SPD for my sticks at 1600, 9-9-9-24-2T. Tried loosening those, then tried with 1333 and timings up to 11-11-11-28-2. Still same issues. I have this problem above 3.8G regardless of my memory settings.

Full bios specs currently:
CPU multi x17 (for 3.825)
CPU/NB Freq x12 (for 2700)
Core boost Disabled
CPU Freq 225 (tried from 200-230 at various memory timings)
HT link x9 (for 2025)
DRAM EOCD disabled
Mem clck 6.66 (for 1500)

Voltages:
CPU PLL Normal 2.5V (what is this???)
DRAM 1.57V
NB 1.195V
HT 1.2
NB/PCIe/PLL 1.88
CPU/NB +0.125 = 1.3
CPU -0.075 = 1.375 --- bios hw monitor and HWmon in windows both report 1.392 at idle
Normal CPU voltage listed in bios at 1.45 which gets to hot under prime and sounds excessive.

DRAM settings:
2-11-11-11-28-6-160ns-12-6-39-5
channel and bank interleaving both disabled
DCTs Drive strength and Addr/CMD all set to AUTO

Help!

Thanks, Dennis

Increase your CPU/NB voltage a lil bit, since you run 8G of RAM.
What is the RAM stock voltage?

Thanks for your reply IOSEFINI.

Stock RAM voltage is 1.5, I have it at 1.57V.

I thought I've read that one should not go above 1.3V on the CPU/NB? Maybe I'me remembering wrong though.

CPUNB voltage can go as high as the CPU core... Just most people (Thubans) get 3.0Ghz at 1.3v

and others seem to suggest I can't read.

I'll play with this a bit more and report back.

Any thoughts on a safe voltage for this board? I don't fold or game heavily and the computer is only on 3-10 hours a day, longer on the weekends.

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks Speced,

When I comes to overclocking, it seems I am never most people:(

How much of this is voltage and how much due to cheaper RAM?

How would adding 8 more gigs of RAM affect this? Would I need more DRAM voltage, more CPU/NB voltage, looser timings?

I have my northbridge for my 1100t at 1.4v and my cpu/nb at 1.55v

This is because I have my northbridge a 3.0ghz

The problem is not going to be cheap ram causing a bsod. The cpu might need a little extra voltage to feed more than 2 ram dim slots if they are really high performance ram, or a little bit out of the motherboard's spec.

Cheap ram is good if you are trying to run it at rated speed. Overclocking anything cheap = maybe a problem

Try
250 x 16 for 4GHz
CPU/NB @ 2000 ....AUTO for voltage
HT Link @ 2000
RAM 1333 9-9-9......1.50V

Increase just the CPU voltage little by little, to see if you can stabilize it
Run IBT or LinX 5-10 times

CPU/NB has no auto voltage setting.

I tried that without much luck. It was cool to see my system boot into 4.0, I had not tried it before, but its very much not stable. Took my VCore up to 1.45 and no stability. That also gets too hot for my cooling so maybe breaking 4 is to much to ask at the moment. I can't really go above 1.42 under load and control the temperatures. I've had the CPU/NB voltage up to 1.325V at ~2700 and still BSOD within a minute or so.

Do I just have a weak chip or not enough voltage? I could try push/pull or different fans on the Hyper 212+ but most people don't report a benefit from that. I currently have the stock Hyper fan at full speed and push. With VCore at 1.39 (~1.41 with LLC under load) temps are max at ~55C and Prime95.

I like the snap it seemed to have at ~4.0. frown.gif
