Black screen on startup? [Fixed]

Thread Starter
I fixed it, look at my last post on this page.

So.... I'm really having an issue here. I've done several restores with no luck. Every time I boot my computer, where the login screen is supposed to be, it's just black with a cursor. I've tried so many things and I'm running out of ideas here. I don't want to do a fresh install.

What I know so far:

- System restore does not work.
- rebooted many times does not work.
- It's not a hardware issue.
-Startup repair does not find anything.
- safe mode does not work either, does the black screen thing.

What other options do I have? mad.gif

You can try running the SFC /SCANNOW command in the command promt in the recovery console.

Failing that I think a re-install will be quicker.

If you worried of losing your data you can use the diskpart commands to split the HDD into two partions and install to the new one, leaving your old one safe with your data.. Google is your friend for the commands. I dont use them, only when I have to so I dont know them off by heart enough to give them from memory.

The easier way is to get partition wizard home edition bootable cd and do the same thing.

This may be a silly question but have you checked both of your monitors for the login screen?

I've had it happen to me before lol

Unplug all the USB devices connected?

Ok, so I managed to get explorer and everything up and running again. But it doesn't work 100%. When I boot my PC it will load my desktop, but I can't open anything. My internet doesn't load, avast is disabled along with many other services, and when I try to open firefox it will just do nothing for a few minutes.

now I'm in firefox and I can load programs but its pretty much like 3 minutes after my desktop is up and running. So very strange. Avast still does not work along with many other services.

I did a registry clean, nope. Did an error scan, nope. I was thinking is there any way I can reinstall/fix windows explorer?

What else could I try?

Thanks to all that helped smile.gif

I'm going to try to do a repair install http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

I'll get back to you when I'm done.

Wow. I feel stupid. So I uninstalled SP1 and I was able to do an upgrade, which essentially replaces all of the windows files but keeps all of you settings and whatnot. While I was waiting I had to play MW3 on my bro's ps3... what a painful gaming experience that was.

Anyways I'll sum it up for everyone, and hopefully it will help those in the future with this problem:

1. I did a system restore trying to recover something, which pretty much broke my PC. Black screen at login screen so I couldn't do anything.

2. After a few reboots, I was able to get to the login screen. But, after logging in, the screen was black again.

3. I pressed control+alt+delete, was able to get the task manager running. Went to new task, typed 'explorer.exe' and presto, the explorer was running and the screen wasn't black anymore.

4. However, I noticed my internet wasn't working, my anti-virus wasn't working, tried to open firefox and nothing happened, etc etc. Just a big mess that left me thinking "How did this happen?"

5. About 3 minutes after trying to open firefox, it suddenly opened and I was able to go online. Avast was still not working, but at least I could get online.

6. Tried to enable avast in it's menu, but it froze every time I clicked the "Fix now" button. So avast was technically still broken.

7. Did many things: registry cleans, registry edits, and even restored all of the w7 files with windows restore.

8. Still, avast didn't work and I had the program not starting issue after the upgrade. What the heck was going on?

9. After I managed to get things running again, I decided to uninstall/reinstall avast.

10. Now my computer works perfectly fine again! No black screens, no non-opening programs, no non-working antivirus. Everything was back to normal. Basically avast was messed up after the restore and was roadblocking everything from properly loading.

And the best part is, I didn't have to do a secure erase (on my SSD, which was my last option). thumb.gif

So I hope this helps anyone in the future who has the problem. Because of my 'oops' moment and the inability to try the easiest solutions, I wasted about 8 hours of my time.

Thanks to everyone who posted and tried to help, +rep to you all.

And of course,

I've actually had something similar like this happen to me in the past, but it was with one of Trend Micro's enterprise solutions.

After installing Trend on a fresh Windows 7 machine, one of it's services (Unauthorized Change Prevention Service) would block explorer.exe from loading and prevented even the login screen from appearing!

Either way, glad to see your problem's been solved. Thanks for the rep, my very first on OCN! smile.gif

Your welcome! Yeah this is the first time something like this has happened to me, and as annoying and strange as it was, at least I've learned from it. thumb.gif

Cheers, And welcome to OCN!
