Dailytech: RFID Embedded Discs to Stop Piracy for Good Says Ritek

According to reports, DVDs, CDs, Blu-ray discs and HD DVD discs may soon have RFID chips embedded into them to prevent illegal copying of movies and music. The chip is currently in development by a company called U-Tech, which is a subsidiary of Ritek, the world's largest manufacturer of DVD discs -- both stamped and recordable. The company developing the actual RFID chips is IPICO, and both U-Tech and IPICO have announced production at one of U-Tech's main production plants located in Taiwan.

This is rediculous. I understand that the companies want to protect their rights, but they can't take the consumer's rights away to secure their own. I will never purchase a disc drive or disc that supports this type of DRM.

HAHA!!! Some hacker out there will create a rfid copy machine. I don't philosophiclaly agree with hacking or pirating...but you got to hand it to those types of people...they never stop.

Then again...if they would have stopped in the first place...software might be alot cheaper and easier to backup. So, Franken gives them the finger!!! (then hides for fear of being hacked)

What they do is wrong, but the response of the media companies is just as bad.

Exactly, I mean, the DRM companies are just asking for it...it always comes. If you can play the movie, you can pirate it. The concept is still there...capturing video and all...

I guess the real importance of this news is that DVD Jon will be starting his timer once they are released

If they could actually get some kind of protection that forced me to buy stuff like CDs, DVDs and so on, I would definitely buy (I already do, but not much).

However, whatever they come up with, someone will find a workaround...
I think this will only encourage piracy. It will add to the cost, and people will have to buy new parts just to play movies. I mean look, you already have to practically upgrade your entire PC just to make it HDCP compliant.

Spend thousands of dollars just to be able to watch movies or download them for free without the DRM? Hmm tough choice...
I have a pretty good idea what the majority of people will choose.

When will these companies clue in? The only way they'll block piracy is if they offer the DRM-protected disks for 25% less than standard ones!

Then if a CD/DVD/HD-DVD/BD do die, that 25% could be used to pick up new ones...assuming they are still around.

Another idea is to DRM protect stuff, but offer warranties on the discs; if it breaks or dies within 10 years, you get another copy at the price of shipping!
