Hey guys!
I don't post much in the case mods because, well, my mods are lame and bland.
However, one of my original mod ideas for my Antec 300 are finally coming to life.
My windowed Antec 300 features 2 CM green LED fans in the front, as well as 4 cathodes on the inside ; 2 UV and 2 green, both hooked up to individual rocker switches on a bay cover.
I'll be taking my own pictures hereafter because of my camera, or rather lack thereof.
Now, I'm going to use one of my empty 5.25" bay drives (took out the 3.5" a while ago!) to fasten in a DVD-drive.
The plan is to fit a DigitalPersona fingerprint scanner within the drive. Idea is that when Windows boots up, a nifty little fingerprint scanner will pop out from a stealthed bay drive to acknowledge that it is I who is supposed to be using this machine, automatically.

I've already taken it apart. All that gross grey plastic covering is removed, leaving me a small fingerprint scanner the same of a zippo, albeit thinner.
Two courses of action will be taken for the open on boot-up mechanism.
A) Software Mechanism
B) Hardware mechanism
I'll also be modding in a few green LEDs, and probably covering the surrounding area of the fingerprint scanner with some acrylic. Either black/green, opaque.
So let me know if you guys have any more ideas pertaining to this little mod.
Feel free to post any questions/comments below! Enjoy!

A) Software Mechanism
Quote:
Leave the DVD drive internals (PCBs) so that my computer can still talk to it. This way, I'll set my BIOS to boot from USB (plugged into the back) which will contain a simple script to open my DVD drive and continue with the boot process.
Advantages:
Straight-forward, simple. Less modding.
Disadvantages:
Windows might want to force my DVD drive closed before Windows boots up.
Less room on the inside due to PCB's, might not fit.

B) Hardware mechanism

I will remove all the fancy PCB stuff inside the drive and find some sort of momentary switch / solenoid, which will run in series/parallel with my computer's power on switch. This will be wired very intricately due to the nature of the location and rudimentary mechanism. The switch will in turn activate the open/close mechanism for the DVD drive. All this will require is a molex or SATA connection, depending on which is more handy. This will be electrical and no need to configure any software to make this work.
Advantages:
Less software to take care of, solely electrical
More room inside DVD drive for fingerprint, easier clearance
Disadvantages:
More finicky considering the electrical layout, considering the power voltages / DVD drive voltages. May requires resistances.
Harder to do, will require more soldering and electrical planning / layout.

) on startup, through a service schedule. So I won't have to worry about it staying open throughout the entire boot process.
