24/7 Maximum Memory Overclock

Thread Starter
Hey,

So I've been working on a good 24/7 overclock on an old 770 Asrock board with 4gb of Ripjaws RAM. I've had a half-assed overclock for about a year and I want to learn how to get a good OC before my 990FXA-UD3 shows up.

CPU: Phenom II X4 955BE RB-C3
MB: ASRock
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 4gb F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

I've done a lot of searching on this site along with a few others and I've been using Slappa's Phenom II IMC Ram Overclocking Guide as I go along. So far I think I have good results. Started overclock the memory first and currently have stable ram with 667mhz and timings a 7-7-6-23-1T. I ran prime95 blend for about 4 hours and memtest with no errors.

With the divider at 1600 and best I could get stable was 800MHz @ 8-8-8-24-1T. Running SuperPI 32M, 1M and wPrime 32M I found my current settings at 667 a bit faster so just stuck with that. When try 6-7-6-23 and 7-6-6-23 won't boot. I feel as I reached the lowest timings I can so decided to up my base clock. Got to 210 for a 700Mhz @ 7-7-6-23-1T and prime95 failed about 2 min in. I dropped back the base clock to 205 for 683Mhz and its running about 1 hour in to prime95 right now.

I have not yet touched NB or CPU clocks. Memory Voltage is set at 1.53V. I've up my NB voltage to 1.20V to see if I can stable out a base clock of 210 with no luck. Reverted back to 1.1V

Stable settings thus far: Divider at 1333 / 667 @ 7-7-6-23-1T
Currently Testing: 683.3 Mhz @ 7-7-6-23-1T

Have I reached the maximum for memory? Is it optimized the best I can? What else can I do to improve my memory overclock before moving on to the North bridge?

I'd really like to reach a base clock of 210 for a 700Mhz @ 7-7-6-23-1T, Any Ideas?

I'm about an hour in to Prime95 Blend with this...

Well at a base clock of 205 Prime95 failed at 2 hours 53 min. I understand this ram isn't very good for overclocking but is there any other way to get it stable? Or am I pretty much maxed out at a 667 @ 7-7-6-23 ?

Its hard to say. Once your UD3 shows up you will be able to push everything much further. I hit 4.0 CPU and 2600 nb easy peasy. Why do you want to overclock your ram? you would see 10 times the performance if you left your RAM at stock settings and pushed your CPU and NB as far as they can go. I have yet to see any improvment form overclocking RAM in gaming and home useage.

Its more of a I wanna try/learn experience think for me I guess. I'd like to know what stuff can do before I get rid of it lol.

Its mainly a gaming rig but I do use a lot of Solidworks and bit of Autocad. I decided to hold off on buying a new CPU/MB so I ended up ordering a 650D case, an SSD, the 990FX-UD3 and some ram, Mushkin Enhanced Blackline (2x4gb) to try and update my system a bit. I don't expect much OC out of the Mushkin either but I needed the extra GB's.

Do you have any regrets/issues with your UD3? I kinda bought mine on a whim cause it had 8+2 power phase and native Sata III

Ahh. I personally would leave the RAM at stock speeds. I always push the CPU and CPU/NB freq as far as they can go, then see if the RAM can be pushed any, most of the time not though. As for the mobo I love this thing. I use the F5 BIOS, rock solid stability at 4.0 CPU freq, with 2600 NB. It took me a moment to get used to gigabyte's BIOS, but that was expected. The best part is I have started doing some testing on pushing my CPU and NB clock's further, So far the best I have gotten is 4.2Ghz on the CPU and 2800 on the NB. I wanna shoot for 4.2 on the CPU and 3000 on the NB. If I where you I would try to get some 1600 RAM with cas around 8 or so and just leave it stock. None of the stuff you listed is going to take full advantage of memory overclock's vs the CPU/NB clocks. and stick with a 2*4 gig kit, using only 2 DIMM's will allow you to push your CPU much further. Your going to like the UD3, just dont panic when you see the NB temps in the 40's to 50c range. its normal and according to gigbyte they test the NB up to 80c without issue's:) good luck!

I got 2 sicks of 4gb Mushkin for a total of 8gb on the way with a few other things. Wow, glad you told me that about those temps. Mine is now sits at 31 after 5 hours of prime.

Well after a bit more messing around I think I got a half sensible overclock with out bumping up the voltages to much.

NB 2600 at 1.25v, CPU at 3800 with one one click up on the voltage and my memory clocks I haven't touched since. Everything seams stable, prime is running now I'll probably leave it for 12 hours or so.

CPU temp max'd out at 44-45 with a room temp of 23.

That is amazing! Great job so far. You now have full full permision to bump your voltage's, if you hit 3.8/2600 your next step is to get 2800 NB and 4.0 on the CPU. Mushkin RAM is great choice too.good luck~
