Best ~300$ card for a U3011? - Page 2

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I am going to be able to grab the Sapphire Toxic Edition frown.gif

So what is the best card aside from the almighty unlockable Sapphire Toxic 6950?

Are the two best cards the 560 TI 2GB Frozr II or a different 6950 2GB?

I know I will be bottlenecked by my E8400 for now, but I will be upgrading shortly.

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=64181&vpn=R6950%20Twin%20Frozr%20II%20OC&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar

MSI 6950 2GB for 260$

http://ncix.com/products/?sku=64191&vpn=N560GTX-Ti%20Twin%20Frozr%20II%202GD5%2FOC&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar

MSI GTX560 Ti 2GB for 280$.

Are these two my best choices? What else comes in at the 2GB range? Thanks smile.gif

I currently have Dell u3011 and yes you need at least 2gb minimum to run bf3 ultra settings.
I had gtx 590 and it couldn't handle bf3 in ultra settings because of vram choke. Even if you have 6970 2gb, bf3 ultra settings won't have good FPS. You will probably end up playing bf3 in High settings, but they're just good as ultra settings. I had 6970 2gb, 6950 2gb, gtx 480, 560ti 2gb, and my favorite was gtx 480.

Yeah, I'm alright with staying @ High Settings, playable comes before pretty for me. GTX480 seems to only come in 1GB, so I will probably not want that right? If I'm on 2560x1600 @ High only, would I still benefit from 2GB? More importantly, what about the future? Definitely want to avoid VRam choke.

Right now I have no problem playing games with gtx 480 and they're actually 1.5gb. It's enough for current high end games, but probably not going to be future proof.
Why not just wait till next month for amd 7000 series?

I would say 1GB is definitely not enough. I currently have two GTX480s in SLI and run a U2711 which has about 10 percent fewer pixels than the U3011 and for games like Skyrim I am getting very close to the VRAM limit. However, if you only have one card you probably won't have the graphical power to be able to turn on all the AA and post processing (which are the things that eat up VRAM) so it may or may not be an issue? So basically in theory 1GB is not enough for today's high end games on max settings but at 300 dollars you likely are not going to beusing max settings and the graphics card and memory limit each other in a way that will nto negatively affect gameplay.

Well... So far i've heard that Nvidia cards are much better than AMD cards in BF3. I run a 560 Ti 2Gb and have everything on ultra and 4xMSAA. The 6950 is good too but i prefer the 560 ti. ^^

Yup I'd agree with this. Personally I'm waiting for people to start selling the 580 classified 3gb water block cards for cheap when there's something for them to upgrade to. I believe 4 of those cards will be futureproof for a while, the 480's not so much.

Heh, did you say 4 580 3GB? =P

I'm still needing to upgrade my E8400 to a i5-2500k this Christmas season, so I have gone with the 6950 2GB to be as futureproof as possible without breaking the bank. The U3011 was a treat and I didn't figure out I would need such a video card upgrade! (Silly I know!)

Hopefully the 6950 2GB will unlock (knock on wood), and then I can get a nice i5 2500k and crank everything up.

Thanks for all your help smile.gif
