It sounds like it's a new drive. As Lex said, you need to create a partition and format the drive. You can use Windows built in software to do it via storage tools, or you can use partition software such as Partition Master or Partition Wizard. I've used both and either one is fine.

Was there any data on the disk before? If not just do this:
  1. Open the Start Menu, type diskpart, press Enter
  2. Type list disk, press Enter
  3. Type select disk X (where X is the number your USB drive shows up as), press Enter
  4. Type clean, press Enter
  5. Type create partition primary, press Enter
  6. Type active, press Enter
  7. Type format quick fs=ntfs, press Enter
  8. Type assign, press Enter
  9. Type exit, press Enter

Maybe try another USB port?

If not I think your drive may be done...not 100% sure though
