Kingwin PSUs, are they crap or worth it?

I'm building a new rig for the wife. Its going to be an i3, with a Radeon HD 4850. If I recall correctly, the 4850 requires a minimum of 450W.

I was thinking about getting this Antec 430W but It wont work with the 4850.

I got an email today from Newegg with coupons to take 20% off any Kingwin PSU. I see their cheapest one is (after discounts etc) the same price as the Antec, but its a 650W. I just need to know if its a good PSU. I've made the mistake of buying junk ones before and them frying on me. I have only bought Antec of Corsair since then.

Actually that Antec EA-430D would do great for a 4850, you can safely get that. An alternative is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207018 -- better performance for the same price (well -- after the rebate).

That said and just to answer your question: among Kingwin units, the only ones I'd really recommend are the Lazer Gold and Lazer Platinum series. And the STR-500. But all of those are pricy.

Solid, thank you very much for the info!

Are you sure that the 4850 will run on anything besides a 450W PSU (In the case of the Antec)? I have a Corsair 550 running with it right now, and it works fine.

On the box though, it says it requires a 450W. I really like the sound of that XFX you linked. May just do that anyway. biggrin.gif

Yeah, the Antec can handle it easy. It can deliver up to 384W of 12V power; the 4850 averages 120-130W under a normal gaming load, which leaves you plenty of room for the rest of the computer, even at full load.
I just like the XFX better because it has much lower ripple than the Antec.

I don't really understand what you just said... at least not all of it... : \

I may still go with the Antec, but I do like the XFX too... and for the same price after rebate it's hard to say no to.

Since you do have that 20% rebate for Kingwin units, you could get a Lazer Platinum 550W which is pretty much the best power supply on the market except for the HCP 1200, but that's a whole different story altogether, or the Kingwin Stryker 500W which is also the best fanless unit on the market.. but if you don't feel like spending the money, both the Antec EA 430D or the XFX Core 450 will serve you well smile.gif

Do you happen to know if this is a public/community code that can be shared, or if it is personalized just for your account? I just bought the STR-500 off amazon for $160 but if there's a chance i can get it 20% off I'm interested in learning smile.gif

edit: n/m; code is BTEJHJH26 and was found in another thread here.

Kingwin are very good power supplies,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121084

Its a solid 650 unit made by superflower and sold as kingwin brand. It should be well built and give you more than enough power regulation. At 20 percent off its only 40 dollars. Im sure its vastly superior to the 460 watt antec unit.

i would go for this, as the HD4850 as you know requires

■450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode) and 650W will give you more headroom for the future thumb.gif
