It cannot feel compassion or be generous since it is not a human being, and as a system it is not intended to do anything like that.

Human individuals (which are generally not amoral, single-minded entities) already have their own methods of generosity, and they are much better at it than a corporation could ever be.

wow thats it? only 380 bundles out of the 5 million serving? and how much will this cost Microsoft? probably around one grand whereas they will get more then that from marketing, this is just a lame PR stunt. kudos to the 380 lucky ones who get it though

I see this as capitalizing on the woes of their customers, and nothing more. Their intentions are obvious by the absolute bare minimum figure they chose. It's offensive on so many levels.

You just proved what is wrong with the world.

A company gives away 380 gaming consoles for free and you complain that its not enough and is insulting. Well you sir are insulting. People with your disgusting attitude are the reason why no one gives anything without expecting something back these days. You are the reason why people would rather amass incredible wealth than give a small portion of their earning to charity.

Sure, it may be a small figure for such a big company but I don't see you donating gaming consoles to soldiers and their families. At the end of the day, whether its a PR stunt or not (ofc its for pr), at least they gave something back. People seem to forget that companies like MS are under absolutely no obligation to donate anything. They could have quite easily sold those units at retail for $200 a pop. But at least they donated something, which is far more than most other companies or even people in society do.

i doubt he is saying its not a nice gesture, just the intentions are probably not so nice.

if i was a multi billionaire celebrity and i gave a dollar to a homeless man, but i had my entire paparazzi entourage cover it, would i still be respectable? See, people seem to forget rich people like me are under absolutely no obligation to donate anything. so for me to donate one dollar is far more than most other companies or even people in society do. I am a multi billionaire, and under no obligation whatsoever, gave a dollar to a homeless man and it just so happens since all the cameras covered it, i got my one dollar back and more in free advertising.

and for someone to even question my intentions is ridiculous. Its obvious i did this out of the kindness of my heart and the free PR was just an unforeseen effect. Because someone called me out on this, because they question my obliviously genuine motives, they proved they are whats wrong with this world

Thread Starter
I think that the important thing is that a good deed was done. Maybe for the entirely wrong reasons, but it was done nonetheless.

My high school English teacher talked about this once. He said that most people do good deeds for the warm fuzzy feelings they get, and therefore, the good deeds are ultimately for selfish reasons.

What he DID say though, was that it's important to do the deeds REGARDLESS of the motivation. Becuase, motives, morals, and method aside, someone is still getting helped.

I'm sure they did for both, PR and good of heart, also yeah 380 Xbox might sound to little, but thats still 9 Xbox 360 per facility its better then nothing, as long as they give something useful I don't mind the motives.

This right here. People are thinking that each soldier is supposed to get one (at least that's what it looks like with all the ones who are "insulted" by the gesture), but it's really 380 Xboxes and Kinects for the 42 facilities... 9 bundles per facility, four players per Xbox... That's still quite a few happy soldiers smile.gif

I say good on them. My brother was in the Navy for 20 years, and I have many friends who are Marines, so I'm always happy to see this kind of stuff happen, no matter the intention. Our good ol' boys need stuff like this.
