Also, make sure your video card drivers are up to date, as this often causes problems. If anything, it's an easy thing to check, and fix, should you discover that is your problem.
Another fix that seems to have helped many people (that i also implemented) is to change the sample rate in your advanced audio properties. I switched my headphones to 16bit, 44100hz instead of 24 bit 44100hz. I have found several threads that say the game just doesnt like certain sample rates, and causes the game to crash to desktop with no error. The threads all end the same way, with a testamonial that indicates the sample rate reduction solves the problem. Hope this helps my friend, because this game is wonderful. GL!
Im running on the 4gb.exe and we'll see how that goes! It could be a driver issue, as I had the 290 Nvidia beta drivers, uninstalled them and put the 285 WQHL driver back on. If it keeps crashing, ill be sure that's it. It just seems silly that running the game on it's stock settings would crash it due to perhaps a memory shortage.
Also, as something else Ive noticed, I run better on maxed AA than with it off and FXAA on...weird!
I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes, and of course, rep all the way around!
