And why are Hitachi's prices high?
to gouge! its nothing new. I was expecting it totally.

Supply and demand. The current demand far out paces Hitachi's ability to deliver, prices go up until demand drops then prices will level off. It's not gouging... it's simple economics.

or you can do what i did a few months ago and just get a few of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Elements-Desktop-External/dp/B002QEBMCI

take the hdd out of the enclosure and slap it in your case. be careful though, wd used 2 different drives for the 2tb elements external drives. keep an eye on the part number.

wdbaau0020hbk-01 is the part number for the wd elements that have the 7200rpm/ 64mb cache/ caviar black hdd.

wdbaau0020hbk-nesn is the part number for the wd elements that have the 5900 rpm/ 64mb cache/ caviar green hdd.

These prices have forced me to look at external drives. Got a 2 TB WD external USB 3 7200 RPM on sale for 99 last week on newegg. Probably won't end up cracking it open since it's just going to be a pure media drive.

It's bad enough that i can't afford to NAS yet. I looked recently and the cheapest 1TB was £85.

Such a first-world problem though.

LOL.... sure, that makes sense if you want the "normal" price of HDDs to be 30-100% more that what they were. In addition, the HDD market is extremely price sensitive. For OEMs, if a HDD works... it is good enough.
Once again...

Finally, someone on OCN who doesn't act like a child when there's a price increase!

Hitachi isn't raising prices to price gouge - they're raising prices because if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to make enough drives to satisfy demand. As it is, they've raised their prices enough that many of you are holding off on purchasing drives, and that is exactly what they want. If they didn't raise prices, all you'd see on newegg is "Out of stock".

Like anything the prices will sky rocket, stay there for a while and then come back down. Unless there is constant flooding for EVER!!! mad.gif
