If they don't, then they could be missing out on extra revenue or expense-savings that an experienced CEO could provide. Reducing CEO wage could very easily backfire on a large company like that, and they could actually lose money, having to pay for less workers or pay each worker a lower wage. In other words, paying a CEO more will usually result in higher company profitability, which usually results in higher wages for those working for said company. Everyone knows that a company that is performing poorly financially will usually freeze or reduce wages in order to keep afloat. Having a good CEO can help prevent those wage reductions or layoffs.

Just to be the devil's advocate.... There is often the case of overpaid CEOs as well. There is the problem that the best interest of a company is a long-term growth while a CEO is usually more concern about growth during their tenure (short-term). This leads to some CEOs hurting long-term performance to boost the current value.

Then you things like multimillion severance for very poor CEOs.

Then you have incompetent guys like Leo Apotheker who got booted from SAP and HP yet still got paid millions. He got $25M when leaving HP after the company lost 40% of its value during his leadership.
Yep, I agree with you. Each company is certainly unique regarding their positions, and what a proper CEO salary should look like, etc. There are definitely cases of bad CEOs getting paid lots of money. The point I wanted to make is that just "reducing executive pay" isn't a catch-all solution. Often times, it will hurt the company and its workers rather than help it.

I never understood severance packages for anyone. Why does anyone get a severance package to begin with? If you're getting fired because you suck at the job, why do you get paid more money to leave? Just doesn't make much sense to me...

I guess, doing some quick reading, severance pay is usually given to avoid lawsuits (employee has to sign documents releasing the employer from any future lawsuits regarding their employment). But in the case of Leo Apotheker, I just don't see any lawsuit he could come up with that would warrant a $25M severance package. It is obvious he was incompetent, so why give him severance at all? Maybe it was written into the original hiring contract or something...

Hitachi isn't raising prices to price gouge - they're raising prices because if they didn't, they wouldn't be able to make enough drives to satisfy demand. As it is, they've raised their prices enough that many of you are holding off on purchasing drives, and that is exactly what they want. If they didn't raise prices, all you'd see on newegg is "Out of stock".

Thanks for the encouragement, but common-sense doesn't translate too well on the internet. Most people just ignore it and continue to spew ignorance. Oh well... I'll keep trying anyway.

The internet is just too full of young people who think they know everything without having any real-world experience. Young people are idealists - they often fail to see the consequences of actions they demand be taken (for instance, no HDD's in stock at all if they didn't raise prices like they have).

Predatory pricing is illegal. Hitachi would be fined for anti-competitive behavior if they did that.

I don't think it's illegal. It could be considered anti-competitive, but it would be tough to prove that especially if the seller is still selling the product above their cost.
