AMD Phenom II X4 810 2.6ghz vs AMD Athlon II 640 3.0GHZ

I was going to give my mom a new computer when I stumbled across this DIY deal on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.757848

I read the Athlon was faster but other said the Phenom was faster, and I'm not good at reading CPU benchmarks. I was going to give my mom my current computer but take out the hard drive, and GPU. The reason for this is I have 8GB of DDR2 800 RAM but this deal has 4GB of DDR3 1333 RAM. Anyway, back on topic, which is faster? And would there be any notable FPS/peformance increase.

Also, I read if you change motherboards you have to reinstall windows, can someone explain this process to me? I know how to do destructive recovery however Windows is Partioned on this computer.

They're pretty close, I'd give the edge to the Phenom II at stock.

I'd keep the 810 and overclock it a bit.

I cannot overclock because I have a locked BIOS and a stock cooler, unless there is a way to bypass this.

The athlon. Same k10 architecture. The phenom should be faster if you oc it to 3.0 since it has an extra 6mb l3.

Well not the stock cooler, but have you tried AMD overdrive?

I wouldn't overclock it much, but you should be able to get it up to 3GHz pretty easily and safely.

Does the board in the bundle allow overclocking?

You could get the the bundle, the switch your board/ram with that bundles board/ram and keep your 810. Then give your mom your chip/board with the rest of the bundle as you had planned before.

Both chips should have a DDR2 and DDR3 controller.

"locked bios"? What exactly do you mean? What is the name of the board? Some low end boards don't have ocing features.

Probably an OEM board would be my guess.

your phenom has L3 cache, just get a new board and overclock it to 3ghz, then you will beat the athlon X4
