Can someone please tell me why BF3 won't install to backup HDD?

...I already went into "settings" in the Origin program and set both the Directories to E:\program files x86\Origin games and the other folder to my "E" drive, which is my (storage) drive. C drive is my boot/SSD drive.

Every time I start the installed off of Origin though, it KEEPS creating the "Origin Games" folder, which essentially contains BF3, in my C:\ drive..... mad.gif

After the previous installs of BF3 had finished and I realized this, I just MANUALLY dragged the folder to my E:\ drive but obviously it didn't work can't drag SSD files to mechanical drives I guess).

Anyone have a solution? Can anyone help me?

Reason is I only have that 60gb SSD and 30+gb are already taken by the OS Windows 7 so I'm left to about 20GB and really need to reserve that space, but with BF3 installing there, I get like 10gb left..... which I'm not a fan of . redface.gif

Apart from uninstallinf and reinstalling origin just copy bf3 to the e drive then create a symlink to the original folder on the c, drive. It will look like it is reading the c drive to origin, and but really its reading the end drive

there is a symlink creator on googlecode I'm on my phone otherwise I'd find it for you

I'm not sure I understand this. When I copy BF3 to the E drive, it won't load. It's not detected by origin.Even though the 11+gb of data of BF3 are in that folder and in my E drive - origin still won't read it or open it.

It only works when I let the game download and install to the C drive. Thus far, as explained above, I cannot get it to install or write the files to the E drive.

So I really wasn't sure what you were saying.

I know you already said this, but are you sure that you set them to install to your preferred directories? I'm just asking because its working fine for me; I have BF3 on my D:\ drive, whereas C:\ is my SSD like you.

But if you do move it, then Origin will still want to look for the file in the C:\ drive where you put it, which is why simply copying the files won't work. PappaSmurfs suggested using Symbolic Linking, which basically means, make a folder thinks it in one location, when its really in another.

I believe this is the application he was referring to: http://code.google.com/p/symlinker/

I've never used such a program myself, but people use it all the time for Steam games, or so I've heard.

Yeah I did; I went into the Origin program and then the settings button and put everything to E:\. I can look at it now and it Says E:\ on both directories.

That's what boggles my mind. But as soon as I start the BF3 downloader and go to check program files x86 in the C:\ drive, it creates the DAMN folder there.....

and nothing in my E:\ drive.

I then go back into the settings in origin just to make sure it's still correct and sure enough it says E:\????!!!!

OMG lol, not to be rude? but did you even read my post?

I haven't figured out a work around lol.

All I been doing is installing BF3 onto my already miniscule storage space on my 60gb SSD where origin directs it.

So nothing has been solved here lol besides my complaing redface.gif

Oh, I apologize, I read your post and figured you got it to work by making registry edits. redface.gif My mistake.

Check out the symlink program though, it should work for what you're trying to do. Just set up the link folder to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\BF3\" or wherever Origin is downloading the game to and the destination folder as something like: "E:\BF3\".

Then startup Origin and let it download. The program should think that its downloading do you C:\ drive, but the symbolic linking will redirect your files onto your E:\ drive. That is, from my understanding of it at least, I've never used the program myself before.
