Please Help! Blue screen death after overclock...

Thread Starter
Hi

Okay, So i overclocked my 2600k last night for the first time. I put the CPU ratio to 38 and left the front side bus to just stock @ 100 mhz. When i loaded the computer it was fine and everything seemed to be in order. I played BF3 for about 5 minutes and then turned my computer off and removed my graphics card again. I also unplugged a Sata3 Port I think and then plugged it back in. When I plugged everything back in it started giving me the blue screen of death just as it begins to load windows...I don't really get it cause I put everything back in the same spot and only slightly altered the CPU multiplier and played for less than 5 minutes on it.

My Rig =

2600k currently set at 3.4 Ghz (changed it back in BIOS after blue screen). I also just installed the Noctua D14 last night too. The graphics Card is a Powercolor 6970, Motherboard = Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen 3, Power supply is 850 W CoolerPower, and there are 5 fans running in the Midi Case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because I have no idea what to do....

thanks in advance.

what BSOD code do you get? first thing to try is to clear CMOS and see if you boot normally.

Check the idle temps in the bios
If they seem ok then just clear the cmos and start over, If you reset bios settings maybe check the sata configuration, that can cause bsod if you dont have the correct driver installed.
If the temps are high then reseat the cooler i suppose.

Can you provide any more information? haha

I reset CMOS manually using the reset button on my motherboard and through Reset UEFI to default in BIOS.

The BSOD message says ***STOP: 0x00000078 (whole bunch of other numbers)

CPU temp = 45
Motherboard temp = 36

I just had an absolute nightmare similar to what your going through at the moment, all I did was change my HDD partition to primary cause it wouldn't let me delete my old windows partition. I didn't even know what i was doing really but it gave me an instant bsod, must have been because the old partition was still active, it could have been page file related or something i dont really know

Anyhow the rig wouldn't even boot afterward, took me forever to actually get it to boot, then fresh installed windows, had the rig out of it's case, disassembled everything, then checked all the pins, then reassembled, in test bed config, ran mem check, prime, the works and everything seemed fine. Then when I installed new beta drivers the same thing again! After countless clearing comos attempts it finally booted in safe mode and allowed me to get rid of the beta drivers.

After all that I began ocing it again and BAM bsod, scary hardware failed screen I'd never seen before came on, even at low voltages. Thought I'd really killed something that time, the lights on the mobo came on but nobody was home, no bios screen, no fan spinning, nothing.

Just when I was about ready to start rma-ing everything, i pulled all the power leads out (even tho the power was off) gave it 5 mins, tried it one last time and thank the lord on it came with a hardware failed and failed to post screen, select last known good config or saved profile. Thankfully it's working now.

I hope it's some kind of bios error, so gona flash the bios and hopefully it plays nice.

Try flashing your bios if your still having problems

Yeah it is a bit of a nightmare. The problem with mine is my computer booted originally after adding this D14 and OCing to 3.8. Just don't really understand why it is doing this now. As much as I like to fix things myself I might have to take it to somebody :-(. I don't think flashing the BIOS would help my problem considering the motherboard is a z68 extreme3 gen3.... But if all else I will give it a go. Cheers mate.

i had it once aswell with my 1090t. Incease the voltage to 1.4 should be enough to handle the overclock even for a 2600k
