Can I just leave my case open?

Thread Starter
With all this fussing over air flow, with intake and exhaust, I just wonder, can I just leave one of the panels of my case off?

I will have an 18 inch cubed chassis, are there any reasons not to leave the top panel open? I don't think there is, but maybe someone else knows better than I?

theres not really a problem with it but IIRC i've read somewhere that it MAY disrupt the airflow leading to "increased temps"
It depends on whether your rig requires a good airflow. If you're overlocked and gmaing and rendering and what not, then you need a good airflow, you should have all sides on your case and a directed flow.

If you are running stock speeds then honestly leaving the panel on or off isnt gonna change much anyway.

Normally with questions like this i would say no it will not hurt anything but you should do some testing to see if it is better. Might get dusty though.

You can leave the side panel off. The only thing that you'll encounter is increased dust in your components. In certain few circumstances, it's better to leave the side panels on as it'll actually provide better cooling. That said, it wont raise your temps by any significant amount.

I know nothing about airflow, but I left my case open for 2 weeks to go on vacation and I came back and found a spider camping out under my hard drives... And I REALLY hate spiders! eek.gif

I leave mine off all the time! Until the wife starts to complain then I put the side back on which last for about two weeks then its off again. I don't do this for air flow though, I just like to see the inside of my case. Yes I have a window but I just like the side off better biggrin.gif

I do get better temps with the side off though. You should test it and see. I would be willing to bet you get better temps.

The only negative is your components are now exposed to the environment(pets, kids etc.)

Also dust tends to build up quicker inside the case. Just dust regularly to combat this negative thumb.gif

Since my rig is near a window I usually just take the side panel off and let that winter air hit it directly lowers the temps by a long shot.. If you can get the room cold enough and can sit through it I'd just open the window for about 2-4 hours with a sweater on and just enjoy the low temps.

This made my day xD totally. i know urban legend told that leaving the side panel off would increase airflow, but your PC will be a dust magnet, just saying.
