a friend of mine told me he had a 5850 siting around as a spare card

its a power color HD 5850 1GB fully working just the fan is noisy ( wont make any difference to me )

i think he said its PCS ( what ever that is)

so is a 5850 1GB a good investment for £50-60 i will be selling my current cards to cover some costs

It's a very very good deal as that card is nearly as good as a 6850, in some benches it's actually better. Go for it

The 5850 beats the 6850 in every benchmark because its physically the more powerful card. The 6870 was the replacement for the 5850. OP that's a great deal for a card that will still run all modern games at 1080 with no problems.

Sell the 8800s in the right place, and it should cover the entire cost of the upgrade, which is DEFINITELY worth it. One 5850 is easily able to match or beat a pair of 8800s in SLI.
