[IGN] Is PC Gaming Really More Expensive Than Consoles?

PC gaming is mega expensive. It's one of the most steadfast assumptions amongst gamers, an argument that crops up in almost every forum thread when the letters "P" and "C" are placed alongside one another. Few people stop to question whether PC gaming actually is more expensive than console gaming, and why would they? When you can buy an Xbox for £200, and a top-end graphics card can cost twice that, the question barely seems worth asking.

Sure to inspire some fanboy rage this article but let's see how this one pans out. rolleyes.gif

It's most costly just for the hardware alone.
Yeah of course we all care about prices and all, but nothing can surpass the way we game on PC..NOTHING.
We can use what ever console controller is out with a simple hardware/software update and other things.
Yeah consoles may be more taylored to the masses, but one day PC gaming will be in that situation.

That's probably the worst build I've seen in awhile. Six-core Phenom, £24 PSU, the RAM is one single 8GB DIMM, gimpy mATX board with no VRM cooling. I mean, I'm all for PC gaming but if you're going to build one then do it right. doh.gif

750w PSU that only has 1x 6pin PCI-E cable. lol

my 400w PSU i have here laying around is probably better at handling this system than this crap.

PC gaming is no more expensive then console gaming, If anything its cheaper for games especially when you consider Steam deals. What costs is the enthusiast side of things. You don't need Tri SLI 590s to play Battlefield 3, you do it because you want to and its a hobby.

And now for my opinion.

This article doesn't really cover it at an essential level. I don't think it's entirely fair, on either platform. They lump on a pricey HDTV, and extra accessories, to rack up the cost for the console and the PC they built is laughably expensive for the crap they put in it.

I can build a reasonable PC with modern components that will play most games rather adequately for £400 (I know because I have, it's sitting in a box waiting to be sold on Ebay right now). Throw in an extra £20 for a mouse and keyboard (you can buy standard ones for £10 each at Maplins).

  • Samsung SH-D163C 16x DVD-ROM
  • Arctic Power 550 Watt Power Supply Unit
  • Coolermaster Elite 335 Case
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
  • Mouse + Keyboard

PC cost: £420

Xbox 360 Console: £180

Xbox Live subscription: £30 Annually

Console cost: £210

Quote:

Playstation 3 Console

Playstation 3 Console: £180

Headset: £10

Console cost: £190

That is all you need for either. They're the essentials.

No point in counting displays and speakers as essentials as you could use any around the home on both formats.

PC gaming costs twice as much on a hardware level, assuming one wants some up to date hardware. The real difference maker is in software.

Assuming every new game released on PC is £30 and every game released on console is £35 (I always buy console games at £35 from my favourite supermarket, you can also get console games pretty cheap online if you shop around). 1 game a month over three years.

Quote:

PC Games over three years: £30x36 months=£1080.

Console games over three years: £35x36 months=£1260

Now let's add those totals up. So over three years...

Quote:

PC: £1080+£420=£1500

Xbox 360: £1260+£90+£180=£1530

PS3: £1260+£190=£1450

This is a more accurate example I think.

That pretty much puts all platforms on par with each other with over a three year span.

Especially considering most people that own a console will also own a pc.

My gaming pc replaces my console, but it is also where I do all my university work, CAD work, trading and general internet browsing. Whats a dell and a ps3, £400 + £200? I have no idea, but you can make a gaming for that

Edit: Actually a basic enough Dell worth owning with a monitor is about £420 by the looks of it, and the ps3 £200.

I laughed out loud when I saw them using a single 8GB stick lachen.gif Emphasizing the core count came in second biggrin.gif
They really ought to research their stuff before posting articles.

Don't forget that if you are a console gamer, you'd probably own a laptop/desktop anyway too

This is the second time I've seen a story come up with some silly ways to make a console almost as expensive as a PC for gaming.

I'm a gamer. I have PS3 and 360 and PC. If the game is available on PC, I buy it for PC. l don't care that it costs more than a console in the long run.
