[IGN] Is PC Gaming Really More Expensive Than Consoles? - Page 21

Well, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but we all know a graphics card upgrade is the biggest thing we can purchase to enhance our gaming experience (as long as you have a non-throttling processor). We like to upgrade said graphics card to run the latest and greatest, however, if we were to keep our graphics card and not upgrade then we wouldn't have to pay the extra every 3 years or so to run at 720p that is xbox. But were enthusiasts, we like to run at 1080p for every game and be on high/ultra settings. We could easily buy an old graphics card and run some of today's latest games, just not at the quality that we expect.

We build computers for more than just gaming, its a multi purpose unit. Where consoles are used only for gaming.

@Flying Nugget and B-rock

guys I totally agree with both of you.

but maybe that's what's hard for non PC gamers to get in to, that WE* already know, as I say to non Techs, 'all the Tommy Coopers' of system building lol

'just like that'

anyhoo, been struggling to sell PC gaming to my friend, he is happy on Xbox.. but I have known him for 20 plus years, I know if he got it working.. he would love it. but the 360 is less of a stress.

Unless you make up a lot of money from buying games, then you guys are just flat out wrong, PC gaming is more expensive. To get equivalent PC hardware and performance to what's in a PS3 you would've needed to spend at least $1,000 at launch.
If we go with the conservative figure of only $1,000, and lets assume you can save $10 per game, you'd need to buy at least 40 NEW games to recover that initial cost. For someone like me who buys 3-4 new games a year, I would never make up the difference.
Again, I'd say that a $1000 PC from 2006 that would compete with the PS3 is VERY CONSERVATIVE, as Blu Ray drives alone were $500 msrp at launch, the 7800GTX was $450 at launch......do I even need to keep going?
Just get over it.....PC GAMING IS NOT CHEAPER THAN CONSOLE GAMING

Where to start. well to begin with the ps3 was 600 at launch plus TV you're looking pretty close to the same as a decent mid range gaming pc that does better especially at 1080p (which consoles can barely do 720)

Secondly you do realize that sony is doing market surveys to see how well the ps4 would sell at 1000 dollars. Thats right a grand for a freaking console and they're quite serious about it. Both companies MS and Sony have said the next platforms will be in the 800 dollar price range. We didn't see console prices fall for quite some time after release and a year later they were completely outmatched by our similarly priced pcs.

SHHHH don't let it out. Console gamers care more about graphics than we do (despite what is spread in propoganda) and it will hurt their feelings if they are informed that their consoles are not only inferior but massively inferior.

PS3 was $600 at launch in the US anyway.

And again the next one is going to be in the 800 dollar plus price range. OOPS thats before a monitor you enjoy that!

Laptops arent terrible if you buy a high end one... The portability is definitely a plus if you are on the go. A decent laptop that will last more than a year is going to run you 500 plus dollars. If you go cheaper you'll be replacing yearly and that can get quite expensive.

the console manufacturers and designers are trying to change this. we see it with netflix and other companies coming to console. The problem now becomes that console companies are basically designing mini computers that arent upgradeable at all. Thus why we are seeing PS4 and the new Xbox coming to be around the 800 to 1000 dollar price range. Because they're basically having to build gaming computers. Again without any ability to upgrade or mod the games. I'll stick with my PCS tyvm. And again. They'll be outclassed by us in a year after a release and I bet the price wont drop in line with the better hardware availability for PCs. Expect to see something along the lines of a quad core (we're on 6 and 8 cores hah) CPU 8GB of ram (im at 16 ALREADY and planning an upgrade) and an nvidia GTX 580 (or 6970 for AMD) for GPU all for the low low price of 800 to 1000 dollars. YIKES they're really getting screwed on that side of the fence.

Alright man, I'm not going to argue with you about console game prices in Austrailia. Because, frankly Brutuz, I don't give a damn.

thumb.gif

And that is grasping at straws, the point is that in a lot of situations PC gaming ends up cheaper overall, especially when compared to 360 owners who love online play, when you buy a lot of games/DLC or if you're including the "from scratch" price which would include a TV for console.

Actually that statement is wrong. Battlefield 3 is in fact native 720 resolution on consoles. From DICE themselves:

Quote:

"Battlefield 3 is 1280x704 on both PS3 and 360," tweeted Andersson. "Removing a few lines from 720p saves good performance and memory for us."

"We have tiny eight-pixel black bars that often are invisible due to overscan - scaling would just ruin the picture," Andersson explained in response to a question by Digital Foundry.

"ZOMG that says 1280x704! WaaaggggghhhhhH!!!! Herp derp! Nuuuuuuuub!"

No.

It's 1280x720, it always was. What they did was remove 8 lines of pixels top and bottom and replace them with black lines to improve performance. The resolution remains the same. Therefore you still see a native HD image. When it's upscaled to 1920x1080 you don't notice the difference. You only see the letterbox effect (which isn't really that noticeable) at 1280x720.

^so you can run say a pc game at 640x480, tell the drivers to center the image and put black bars around it to fit your 1920x1080 monitor, and you can say "hey it's running at 1920x1080 it just has huge black bars around it" rolleyes.gif

try harder.

^so you can run say a pc game at 640x480, tell the drivers to center the image and put black bars around it to fit your 1920x1080 monitor, and you can say "hey it's running at 1920x1080 it just has huge black bars around it" rolleyes.gif

If that floats your boat sure go for it. Knock yourself out...

You're misunderstanding. It's was originally developed at a native 720 resolution.

They simply removed a few lines top and bottom for consistent performance and blacked them out. The image isn't downscaled either.

Therefore it doesn't upscale to 720, because it's already at 720 natively, albeit with a small letterbox effect.

But of course, the developers of the game, in this case one of the renderers, are going to lie. rolleyes.gif
